If you have not read my introduction post yet to this reality surviver competition show, please go back and read it to get a great idea of what to expect from this show.
If you do not want spoilers, please do not continue reading because I will not hide anything in my review. Besides, this episode already aired a while ago.
We shall begin our journey with the boys of Make Mate 1. I will make my review as short as possible, but still comprehensive to the performances that the contestants give us. I am a bit nervous because I hope to see more great performances than not so great performances. As I mentioned, I reviewed an SM reality survivor competition show, NCT Universe: LASTART so my expectations are extremely high and I need to lower them just for this show as a start. I won't be quick to judge so let us see what we are working with in this show.
I already watched episodes 1 and 2, made general notes as I was watching it, and I am rewatching it again in detail to see what else I missed to include in this review. I will continue doing this for all the other episodes. Honestly, with so much information thrown at me, I find it hard to keep up. I'm usually a details kind of person if you can't already tell from my writing.
The show starts off with showing us that these 36 male contestants are ordinary people who happen to have a dream to become an idol. What? That is totally unrealistic. If that was the case, I have also been dreaming about becoming a Hong Kong celebrity since I was fourteen years old, but that never came true and I also never joined the Miss Chinatown pageant, which could qualify me to go to the Miss Hong Kong pageant supposedly. I would have seen that as a ticket to stardom, however shady it may be. Even so, the chances of being legitimately scouted on the streets or online, is really slim to none. Therefore, I believe that without hard work and effort, there will be no result. These male contestants had to have done something to qualify them for this show. In a way, being on this show already will bring them some type of fame. I see this as a win-win situation. One thing is for sure is that the contestants will be either friend mates or rival mates, and they are all in this show altogether.
Will you be my mate?
Ooh, this could be cringy for a guy to say to another guy or was this phrase directed to the female audience? On one hand, the contestants need to work in teams. On the other hand, they have to convince the voters, mostly female that I have seen, to vote for them and give them love/support and popularity.
What surprises me is that all the audience/supporters seem to already know who they want to support with signs of some of the contestant's names. I guess these must be hardcore fans who already blindly support a contestant without actually see him perform yet. If I was in the audience, I need to remind myself to keep a neutral stance no matter who I think my bias is if I had a bias already, which would be unusual. I think if it was one of my friends or family members who was competing then it's natural that I would have a bias and will support them, but still, for the most fairness of it, I need to stay neutral.
I know life isn't fair to begin with, but I shouldn't add to the unfairness. I hope this competition is as fair as possible.
For the first and second episodes, we have a special guest host, Lee Gi Kwang from the male group, Highlight, formerly under the name, BEAST. Lee Gi Kwang is no stranger to the k-pop music industry, debuting in 2009 (wow, around the time I became a K-pop fan), and also somebody who I used to see often on variety shows. Ki Kwang is so nice and relaxed as a host, which is comforting to see when all the other contestants are in anxiety. I hope he can be a soothing pill for the contestants.
Special host Lee Gi Kwang explains that the keyword, mate, can either have a friendly meaning or a competitive meaning as in "checkmate." That was funny as I'm sure nobody really thought about the checkmate part. I consult with my lovely Merriam-Webster dictionary for the many meanings of mate.
The show proceeds to explain how to vote for seven contestants a day on the Makestar app. I already explained this part in the introduction post. Since the stage is happening a month before the show premiere, the votes in this pre-vote round will not affect the contestant's rankings. I'm the type of person who can't vote anyway without actually seeing their performance. Otherwise, I would just vote based on looks and maybe a little bit of the video clips if I have time to delve into it. It would not have been accurate in my opinion.
Special host Lee Gi Kwang explains that the contestants will be stepping on the stage for the first time in their lives. I honestly doubt that! If anybody is passionate about being a performer, this can't be their first time. They must have maybe done a school performance or a street performance at least because if this was their first time performing, I would be uneasy. Yes, this is their first time performing on the show. I would have accepted that explanation instead.
C mates are introduced, which are like the mentors and judges of the show. You and I can be online C mates as we watch the show remotely.
Lim Han Byul aka Onestar: The most charismatic C mate, probably due to his experience as he is no stranger to reality survivor competition shows (Girls Planet 999 and Boys Planet).
Hanhae: I am not too familiar with him. I see in his profile that he is a rapper and singer.
Vata: I didn't watch the Street Dance Fighter reality survivor competition show, but I remember Vata as the leader of "We Dem Boyz" dance crew. I wish I could watch that show with subtitles.
Ingyoo: He is also part of the We Dem Boyz dance crew and I am not familiar with him, but I see in his Instagram profile that he is the Director of We Dem Boyz. Nice! Honestly, I do double takes whenever he is on screen because he reminds me so much of Taiwanese actor Jian He Wu whom I recently watched in the Netflix series Let’s Talk about Chu. When I have time, I will post a review about it (for mature audiences only). They probably have the same height and about the same vocal tone.
Kim Sung Eun is a well-known established vocal coach. I am also not familiar with her, but this is not her first reality survivor competition show as well.
It sounds like we have a good mix of judges or C mates to cover vocals, rap, dance, and performance.
Let's add ourselves to the mix: professional reviewers. At least I am no stranger to reality survivor competition shows since Produce 101 Season 2 (2017).
On top of that announcement, special C mates are also introduced for this episode to provide commentary on the performances: Lee Mi Joo (formerly from the girl group, Lovelyz) and Choi Hyo Jung (leader of the girl group, Oh My Girl). I like that they introduced female commentators because we need that female-type voice for a show that is full of male contestants.
Three weeks before the performance, the C mates were able to meet the contestants and their mid-assessment review as a group. This is probably the most interesting part of the episode. Surprisingly, even the C mates themselves are meeting for the first time in many cases.
The show tends to jump back and forth, confusing me in some cases, but I will already name all the teams that have been established for the first performance round. I like it better when I have information that is organized (in order of appearance):
Team Growl (song originally sung by EXO)
Team Hello Future (song originally sung by NCT Dream)
Team Breathless (originally sung by Astro)
Team Miss Right (originally sung by Teen Top)
Team Be Mine (originally sung by Infinite)
Not shown so far are the following teams:
Team Fiction (originally sung by BEAST/Highlight)
Team Very Good (originally sung by Block B)
Time U (originally sung by Super Junior)
There are a total of eight teams, but of course the scenes are cut out, confusing me some more.
Both C mate mentors and contestants both greeted each other before everybody took a seat.
Team EXO is the first group to be introduced first as C mate Lim Han Byul is fond of EXO. However they are the first to come out and also the first to sit in the first row so it's natural that they are first. I find out what the green chalk boards that each group carried are for as they write keywords on them to introduce themselves individually.
Jeon Jun Pyo was highlighted to be a great dancer who the group Riize gave recognition to when he covered their Siren song. C mate Lim Han Byul mentioned that videos can be manipulated by AI nowadays and wants to see it live. I thought that comment could be borderline rude, but his intention is to give Jeon Jun Pyo an opportunity to shine. It's true that Jeon Jun Pyo can execute Siren well, but I am more interested in the live performance. Also, as we get introduced to more and more contestants, I forgot about this contestant, but I should keep Jun Pyo on my radar. Anyone who can professionally cover the Siren song needs recognition.
Shin Won Cheon was highlighted to be a number 1 winner in a Judo competition in Seoul and also a triple crown. He didn't go into deep detail, but after a little bit of research, I take it to mean that he won three of the most important competitions of the season. My husband mentioned that international competitions also count. Shin Won Cheon mentioned a lot of sport accomplishments. Why did he want to be an idol then if he is already so accomplished? Am I looking at somebody similar to Enhypen's Sunghoon, who was working towards professional figure skating before becoming an idol singer?
Dance C mate Vata mentioned that Won Cheon looked scary while performing alluding to his competitive nature, but to me, that only means being in the Growl team is perfect for him. I want him to act like he's out to kill the competition. He is perfect for a concept like Growl.
Jo Min Jae is somebody that I am very interested in as he seems to be a vocal master with six members of his family being professional singers. This guy gives me Doyoung from NCT vibes. I think it is his confidence as a singer that will bring him success just like Doyoung. He is made for debut. I will consider adding him to my final lineup.
It was during this time that Mate Pick was introduced where the contestants can vote to gauge who is the best or worse in several categories. Judging from past survival shows, this type of honest vote is a good indicator of who is on top and who needs to improve their performance unless it is about the looks category, in which anything goes. Contestants are not allowed to put blank as an answer and they are allowed to be anonymous, though the camera probably captured some interesting handwritten answers, which I won't bother looking into as it was meant to be anonymous.
Team Growl has two mate picks: Ace team (like the avengers team) and number one vocalist being Jo Min Jae.
I haven't seen their performance yet, so it's hard to tell at this point if they are really the "Ace" team.
Conclusion: I pick Jo Min Jae as the contestant to look out for.
The Hello Future team came to the stage next. The judges wanted to announce their Mate Pick scores first.
Team Hello Future has one mate pick: Looks (Bing Fan).
I'm not entirely convinced that Bing Fan is the most handsome trainee and I'm not exactly into vanity contests. Bing Fan talked about his love for K-pop and K-dramas, which I totally understand except I haven't memorized any specific K-drama scenes like he did. I want to see how well he performs later.
Midori was highlighted next for appearing in a short video with 35 million views. Again, I am not the type of person to be rating a competition based on looks so I won't comment much here.
Conclusion: I don't have any particular person that I am on the lookout for as they only discussed looks in this group.
We're moving fast with the Be Mine Team being introduced.
Jang Hyun Jun was introduced as the main vocalist (center) of their main theme song, "한 페이지가 될 수 있게 (Time of Our Life)." Nice to finally meet the man in the middle. Honestly, I was supposed to pay attention to such a person who has the main spotlight, but somehow I forgot about him later on. Perhaps he has that band voice, which the producers liked.
The Be Mine team has two Mate Picks: Number one vocalist being Jang Hyun Jun and most popular contestant Noh Gi Hyeon.
Does this mean Jang Hyun Jun is the competitor of Jo Min Jae, who was also picked as a number one vocalist? We have two number one vocalists so far.
Noh Gi Hyeon is apparently specializing in dance. He uses his tongue a lot in dancing, but I hope this is not a habit. I know Sakuya from NCT Wish uses his tongue a lot too, but his tongue habit seems to be hidden while he is dancing. He's a good dancer, but I would not yet put him in my final lineup just yet.
Conclusion: I'll be on watch for Jang Hyun Jun because I pay attention to top vocalists.
Team Breathless is next. Their introduction is so cute as they capture their last breath. This makes them memorable.
Jung Hyun Jun introduces himself as the maknae (youngest of a group) of the entire competition at 15 years old. This is surprising because he is very tall and I can tell that he is very passionate about being a performer. It's good to know what one wants when one is young. I would say the sooner, the better it is to find one's passion, but also it is not bad to find out later when one is truly ready for it. Jung Hyun Jun wants to be remembered as a passionate maknae and a number one dancer. Those are serious goals. He seems to be overly mature for his age as well. He picked some type of Spanish club music to dance to, but it makes me think whether that is appropriate for a 15 year old boy. At one point, he slaps his butt and I just feel weird. I rather he picked a song more appropriate for his age. However, he doesn't seem to be a number one dancer to me, but his skills are decent so far.
Miraku was highlighted next as an Aroha (Astro's fandom name) fan. He joined the right team as he is part of the Breathless team. I wonder if the contestants were allowed to pick their own song. When I saw his dance, it was so powerful and impactful as he uses big movements. I can't believe he started to do Astro cover songs, but he dances so powerfully unless he was already a great dancer before he was introduced to Astro songs by his mother and sister. Teammate Jung Hyun Jun better watch out as Miraku is a formidable opponent.
Kim Shi On was highlighted next to be a super flexible person. Ironically, Kim Shi On mentioned that he was born with short tendons and an Achilles' heel, but with practice, he was able to beome super flexible. He showed the audience his side split before moving his legs behind and showing the camera his signature heart, which is composed of the Korean shiot character with his right fingers to represent "Shi" and a half heart with his left hands to represent "On." It doesn't look like a heart shape, but I will give him credit for creativity and his ability to stand out from other competitors and even idols. This guy, to me, may get the most popular contestant vote from the voters. At this point, as cute as he is, I am not putting him on my watch list just yet until I see his performance.
Jung Jae Young was highlighted as the last member. For this team, they highlighted all of the members, so this is probably a team I need to watch out for in the future. Jung Jae Young was in a K-pop dance team in Gyeongju and has memorized more than 200 songs. That, to me, is very impressive. I can barely remember the choreography of past songs that I learned, but then again, I think it would require him to practice regularly just to remain comfortable with performing these songs at any moment.
I appreciate that Jung Jae Young is also mouthing the lyrics as he dances and that oozes confidence to me. I can see how he is a main dancer of his dance team as he appears to dance cleanly. He also danced the TWS "Plot Twist" song so that song is pretty recent so it makes me think that he was part of the dance team until very recently or until they started filming for this program. Shi On did not hesitate to join in for this song to support his teammate and he is so cute. I just realized that we have a Shi On active already as the leader of NCT Wish, but he spells it as Sion in English. I guess anybody whose name is Shi On is meant to be attractive.
C mate Hanhae compared Jung Jae Young to Key from SHINee who also knows about every song. Yes, Key is really unmatched, but Jung Jae Young could be at that level as long as he continues to practice regularly. There could be natural geniuses in life, but I believe in hard work paying off.
Conclusion: My first impression is to watch out for Jung Hyun Jun and Miraku. Jung Jae Young's impact was not as strong, but I think I might be underestimating the four of the members during the second time review of this episode. Again, there is too much information flying towards me so I rely on my limited memory to see who is memorable to me.
The Fiction Team came on stage where Kai is the first to be introduced. He was very confident and he is probably the most handsome Japanese idol that I have ever seen and with his tall height. His smile is infectious and he looked very friendly unlike my typical experience with Japanese people who rarely display their emotions out in the open. He felt like a breath of fresh air.
Kai mentioning liking banana milk is like Sakuya from NCT Wish mentioning that he loves bread during the initial broadcast. These are just random comments, but I think, could be effective towards memorability towards people we are not familiar with yet. However, by the time Kai performed on the actual stage, I had already forgotten that he liked banana milk. However, in Sakuya's case, he was the only contestant who made that outlandish comment and I was somehow able to remember his love for bread and his cute username/nickname "sakupang."
Ki Hyeong Jun was introduced as "Geosu's Mustard Boy" and a 뚝딱 "clunky" or "Dduk Ddak" boy.
Geosu is known place for its mustard greens so ideally Ki Heyong Jun wants to be more famous than the mustard greens. I just hope it's not for a negative reason. Sadly, he couldn't get a sentence out smoothly.
As abrupt as a tick-tock sound, Hyeong Jun is not comfortable with himself and I don't consider that a good thing no matter how many people praise him as cute. This is potentially detrimental to his career if he cannot dance fluidly and also behave in a relaxed manner. It's fine if he lets the clunky part of him show through in casual situations, but seeing him as a performer like that will make me uncomfortable.
Conclusion: I don't have any special pick for this group as the whole discussion seems so random and I am looking for talent. I'll see them on stage.
The Very Good team came on stage, but their team greeting was very lackluster. If my team name was "Very Good," it better be said with a enthusiastic tone. Jung Jae Young from the Breathless team said their name with enthusiasm.
This team has a Mate Pick: Best Performer, Jia Hao.
Interesting that I haven't seen a Chinese contestant that is formidable since ZEROBASEONE's Zhang Hao who overwhelmingly ranked first in the final round of the Boys Planet reality survivor competition show. Coincidentally, Jia Hao also has the Hao sound in his name, but they are different Chinese characters and different meanings: 章昊 (Zhang Hao) vs 张家豪 (Zhang Jiahao). Even the surnames have the same sound, but different characters/meaning.
Jia Hao wasted no time to dance a super fluid dance and C mate Vada was thoroughly impressed, stating that Jia Hao was doing advanced moves and details. I wonder if Jia Hao had professional training before he joined the show. I feel like Jia Hao and Jo Min Jae from the Growl team will be the most sought out contestants.
Han Yu Seop was highlighted as a former guitarist in a band. It is only fitting that he chose to sing "Get a Guitar" by Riize. Riize has been mentioned on this show twice already, so I feel the power of Riize. Han Yu Seop's voice is very smooth and baritone. Are we sure these are everyday people picked for the competition? C mate Lim Han Byul gave Han Yu Seop a standing ovation. C mate Kim Sung Eun stated that Han Yu Seop was grooving rhythmically in a low voice.
Scuba diver Seo Yun Deok reminds me of Shin Won Cheon from the Growl team, being physically active. However impressive as it is, I can't see how this is related to being a performer.
Next, the judges/C mates move on to the question mark on the board. I thought this trainee would write down random skills to show off, but he wrote "탈북" (Tal Buk, Korean escapee) to shock the audience. This was Kim Hak Seong's introduction.
Miraku from the Breathless team asked Kim Shi On if it was okay for Kim Hak Seong to be on a TV broadcast. Kim Shi On replied knowingly that South Korea will protect Kim Hak Seong. I would say that Kim Hak Seong is taking a big risk, so I understand his nervousness besides being on stage.
Kim Hak Seong arrived in South Korea in 2017 so it has been seven years. I am still worried if he has family in North Korea and whether their lives would be in danger if he goes public with this story. As it turns out, he was only interested in being an idol after watching TV in South Korea after his escape.
Kim Hak Seong made a few trainees cry upon explaining his story. I was getting a bit teary-eyed myself. C mate Hanhae asked Kim Hak Seong a good question whether Kim Hak Seong had a goal that he wanted to achieve upon debut. Kim Hak Seong answered wisely with rather than a goal, he wanted to give people who are in difficult situations in which they cannot pursue their dreams some hope. I was touched by his answer. While his backstory is impressive, I'm here to see performances.
Conclusion: I will be watching Jia Hao as he is very impressive. Han Yu Seop is also on my radar with his great guitar performance.
It's such a low blow to the U team that they weren't shown in the show at all up to this point. I am not sure why the producers decided to hide this team. I already picked six contestants to be on my radar: Jo Min Jae, Jang Hyun Jun, Jung Hyun Jun, Miraku, Jia Hao, and Han Yu Seop.
We are brought back to the performance stage in which the contestants will start performing in front of the live audience. In this round, the scores from the live audience will be combined with the scores of the C mates for the total score. The live online vote will not count in this round as mentioned earlier. After the first round of ranking, the rank of each contestant will determine if they will be in one of two groups: Mate A group or Mate B group. This arrangement will be called "Mate Dreams." I'm still not clear what that means, but we'll find out.
Let the competition begin!
The first team to perform is the Be Mine Team:
Choi Min Jun
Jang Hyun Jun
Noh Gi Hyeon
Jo Seung Hyeon
Seo Ji Ho
During their team introduction, I love how each member did the main "be mine" pose, one by one. It is clear the audience thinks Noh Gi Hyun as the most handsome. The crowd in this show is not afraid to tell guys how handsome they are to them. Koreans are becoming so bold.
Unfortunately, the show revealed that the "Be Mine" team received criticism during their mid-assessment performance. C mate Lim Han Byul mentioned that the song overpowered the group. C mate Ingyoo wanted a more detailed and refined plan for the "Be Mine" performance. He didn't like that they were all singing the "Be Mine" part at the same time. Honestly, I thought that was a bit distracting as well. C mate Vata couldn't feel their charm. To Vata, Jang Hyun Jun and Noh Gi Hyeon felt like engineering majors who dance. I take that to mean that engineering majors know nothing about music.
Noh Gi Hyeon mentioned they were too busy worrying and practicing kalgunmu or "razor-sharp group dancing" so they were not able to display individual charms. Kalgunmu is the SM Entertainment way and also the type of performance that is most appealing to me.
After the performance, the group focused on how they can improve their performance so that there could be a climax towards the end of their performance. The problem is that these contestants have never fallen in love so they have no idea what type of emotion they should show to the woman that they love. The group continued to practice different emotions whether it is anxiety, forcefulness, pain, and more, which is probably fun for them to get into acting for the part. I think it's cute that Jang Hyun Jun wanted to defend the engineering majors who can be sexy. Exactly. Why can't engineering majors be sexy? If they have a will, there is a way.
The actual performance started with explosive power. With Jo Seung Hyeon in the middle, the team looked stronger. I guess this emotion starts off in a type of anger. I can tell that this team is very cohesive. Up until the first chorus, I wasn't particularly impressed with the vocals. I thought Jang Hyun Jun's notes leading up to the chorus sounded a bit strange. Unfortunately, he did not stand out for the rest of the performance for me. I appreciated how the group maintained the energy in the chorus with a stronger "Oh" each time because I can see performers can possibly get weak at that point due to the high pitch. While Noh Gi Hyun sang well, his vocal technique sometimes didn't fit the style of the song. I need the singing to be shorter and powerful for this type of song. His notes tended to linger. I wrote in my first time impression that Noh Gi Hyun's singing wasn't too stable, but hearing it a second time, it was decent. During the second chorus part, I heard Noh Gi Hyun's vocals rather clearly. In my first time notes, I wrote that Seo Ji Ho's performance was a little bit weak. I think by watching it a second time, Seo Ji Ho can show more confidence in his singing as he cut his notes too short. He could afford to hold his notes a little bit longer to dominate his part. I didn't notice Jo Seung Hyun that much during my first time watching the performance, but in the second performance, he caught my eye with his powerful dance moves and his expressions. He probably fit the song's concept the best. While his falsetto needs a bit of work, I believe he can improve in the future.
Actually, I think they can go for a more bad boy concept. Having Noh Gi Hyun with a bowl haircut isn't as effective as giving him some slick hairstyle that would make him a bit more rebellious and potentially more manly. I see they went for a more pure concept in clothing and image. I don't think I can take a man seriously if he is looking pure, asking me to be his lover like a declaration. I expect some boldness, but of course, not that it can't happen, but the story in my mind is more spicy.
Conclusion: I will be a bit strict here in that I currently do not see any particular mate in which I want to bring to the final lineup. While the group gave us a better than average performance, it wasn't enough for me to consider them into the final lineup. If I need to pick only seven contestants, I need to reserve it for the very best.
Special Host Lee Ki Gwang reminded the audience that they cannot vote for the same contestant multiple times, but they have the freedom to vote for each member at least once. This type of voting format will give me difficulty because it would really be hard for me if I were in the audience to not press that button for each contestant unless the performance is truly terrible. I figure that terrible performances will not happen often. I would have voted for all five members.
I realized that I didn't comment on Choi Min Jun. Unfortunately, he never entered my individual radar on the first or second watch. That is unfortunate. No feedback is a type of bad feedback. I hope he thinks of special ways to be in the spotlight so that he is not forgotten.
Special C mates Lee Mi Joo and Choi Hyo Jung both picked Jang Hyun Jun as their one pick.
I think if I had to pick one person, and I have to think hard in this case, it would have to be Noh Gi Hyun as he stood out the most to me as the most memorable, but stable. He was easily heard during the chorus part.
The audience ended up choosing Noh Gi Hyun as their favorite mate. I guess I follow the crowd this time.
The second team to perform is the Breathless Team:
Jung Hyun Jun
Miraku
Kim Shi On
Jung Jae Young
They have the best intro. They march in and also hold their breath with their fist motion before letting it go at the end of their introduction, which make them a super memorable and cute group.
During their introductions, Jung Jae Young was revealed that he is 20 years old, while Miraku and Kim Shi On are 16 years old, followed by the maknae of the entire competition, Jung Hyun Jun who is 15 years old.
During their mid-assessment evaluation, Kim Shi On had difficulty tying his shoelaces, but I guess it is because he was nervous because I am sure he can tie his shoelaces in a normal situation. They seem to have given a very stable performance as we could only see parts of it. C mate Vata actually wrote in his notes that Jung Hyun Jun will "make it" or become successful.
A Mate Pick reveal shows that the Breathless team was also picked as an Ace team. This means that there are two Ace teams: Growl and Breathless.
During their practice sessions, all I see is Jung Hyun Jun being the person who is constantly suggesting ideas for the group. I was a little disappointed as I hoped to see others also providing ideas as well.
In the individual interview, Miraku confided to the viewers that he is the most worried about himself. He is not stable in hitting the high notes needed after they do all the jumps in the chorus parts. His voice was constantly cracking, but this is to be expected as he is only 16 and it could happen for boys his age who may be going through puberty.
They have great expressions when they started the actual performance, so I am hopeful that they will do well. I can hear that Miraku has some pitch issues, but I know he is already doing his best. Jung Hyun Jun really tried to make his part unique to himself. I was slightly irritated that he can possibly overact or become overeager and I feel that the performance would be better if he toned it down just a little bit. Miraku seems to fare better as a rapper. Unfortunately, Miraku had an oops moment when his voice cracked during the second chorus. I still applaud him for being able to keep going and finish the song. I wrote in my notes during the first time watching the performance that Jung Jae Young was the most stable, but hearing him sing his first verse during my second time watching the performance, it wasn't as stable as I thought. In the second verse after the second chorus, he redeemed himself with better vocals. Kim Shi On shined in the second verse where he has a distinctive accent, but it works for a song like this one where it is very youthful. I want to see how well he does in a different type of song.
Conclusion: This is another tough decision. I ended up choosing Kim Shi On to be in my final line up, but this will also be dependent on whether he can handle different genres of songs and concepts. He was very cute and memorable. The other member I initially chose was Jung Jae Young because I initially thought he was stable throughout the performance, but then after watching the performance a second time, I would change it to Jung Hyun Jun because despite thinking that he was overacting, he was very stable in singing and dancing throughout the whole performance and dare I say that he has the most energy. As C mate Vata mentioned, Jung Hyun Jun will "make it."
Therefore, I have two slots filled up for the seven member vote: 1. Kim Shi On
2. Jung Jae Young --> Jung Hyun Jun
Honestly, the Jung Jae Young slot could easily be changed to another contestant as I couldn't figure out who my seventh vote would go to so I would say this is very subject to change in future episodes.
I love how each contestant has their own gestures to encourage voters to vote for them, which I haven't seen too much in past reality survivor competition shows.
Special host Lee Ki Gwang mentioned that jumping and singing is already very hard and especially at that height and asked Miraku if he possible heard something and Miraku already confirmed it mid-sentence. Honestly, I think I would include Miraku in my future final lineup because he is very memorable and I would not question to give him another shot because he seems to be a good rapper, dancer, and potential singer as soon as he overcomes his voice crack phase. He is a potential all-rounder so I will still keep a radar on him.
Miraku couldn't speak further and started crying while everybody told him it was okay. I understand that is not how he would have wanted to give first impressions or give the Aroha fandom of Astro any justice, but I think better performances await him. I like his attitude that he will work harder and that's the kind of mentality that will potentially bring him a higher chance of success.
When it is time to pick the best contestant of the group, special C mate Choi Hyo Jung picked Kim Shi On simply because he pulled the highlight part of the song successfully. I agree with her because I started noticing Kim Shi On seriously at that point. I think that part would have been the killing part of this song.
Choi Hyo Jung was right and Kim Shi On is selected as the fan favorite with the most points. I can honestly see that happening. I would have voted, yet again for all five members of the group. However, Miraku is still a strong contender so I need to watch out for him and Kim Shi On.
Miraku really reminds me of Geonu from the Just B group. I feel that same vibe from Miraku.
In general, this team was a strong team in which I would rank one step above the Be Mine team.
The third team to perform is the Growl Team:
Jeon Jun Pyo
Lin
Takuma
Jo Min Jae
Shin Won Cheon
The group's introduction was very creative. They stood in different angles in a vertical line and with a fake explosion that the person in the middle (Takuma) creates, the members jump to the sides to finish their introduction like a bomb.
Special C mate Lee Mi Joo mentioned that Lin looks like singer Hwang Min-Hyun. I do agree to as their eyes look similar.
Surprisingly, Shin Won Cheon is the maknae of the group. Who knew? Special C mate Choi Hyo Jung thinks that Shin Won Cheon looks like Yun Sung-Bin, a South Korean skeleton racer.
As their performance starts, Lin started off strong with setting the tone. Jeon Jun Pyo sang decently. He is actually a strong singer. I only saw him dancing earlier in the episode, but his singing skills are also not bad so far. Jo Min Jae easily gave me Chen vibes from EXO when he sang his part so effortlessly. I loved the way the group also tried harmonization, something in which I didn't hear from the other groups so far. That skill is truly one level above the other groups. This group is strong, but the most out of place member is Lin. He didn't fit the Growl vibe where he could have inserted his own Growl attitude into his singing. I am loving the way Shin Won Cheon is playing his part. He is the person who fits this song's concept the best with his tough guy gestures and movements. Shin Won Cheon also had no problem hitting the high falsetto notes. Takuma was doing well throughout the performance, but he didn't grab my attention so that's a shame. I guess if he is surrounded by talented members, he really needs to also step it up a notch to be noticed. Meanwhile Jo Min Jae surprised special host Lee Ki Kwang with his high notes. Sadly, during the bridge part after Jo Min Jae sang, Lin's voice was very distracting when singing with Takuma. I really think Takuma should have sang it with Jeon Jun Pyo. Lin's voice feels out of place in this song. Or Lin should have harmonized with Takuma instead. I think Jo Min Jae's climatic high note blew a fan in the audience away and special host Lee Ki Kwang a second time. I heard Lin's voice again during the chorus when it didn't sound out of place, so maybe Lin just need to sing the right notes so that the overall sound of the group can be harmonized.
I must admit the first time I heard the performance, it was pretty evident that all I could mostly focus on was Jo Min Jae. He was singing like every four to five seconds so he had a lot of lines to sing. However, as much as I like that, I would have liked to hear more balance from the group. There is no doubt that Jo Min Jae is my number one pick at this point. He must debut.
Episode one ends at this point.
I'm going to go ahead to re-arrange my final picks based on episode one so far.
Conclusion: I was basing my decisions on the first watch, but watching this a second time made me have serious second thoughts. The Growl team cannot be underestimated.
My personal group rankings so far: Growl Team
Breathless Team
Be Mine Team
Initially, I only had Jo Min Jae in my final lineup because I was blinded by his talent on stage. However, I want to recognize Jeon Joon Pyo for being super stable during his performance. Shin Won Cheon also pulled his weight. It wouldn't make sense if I didn't add more Growl members to the final lineup.
Therefore, I have made the following for the time being as I will definitely need to trim this down to the final 7 for my votes: 1. Jo Min Jae (no question)
2. Jeon Joon Pyo (very stable performance)
3. Shin Won Cheon (surpassed my expectations with matching the concept and falsetto singing)
4. Kim Shi On (he is still too memorable in my mind)
5. Jung Jae Young --> Jung Hyun Jun (this is going to be tough as Jung Hyun Jun is now on the brink of elimination from my top 7)
---
6. Jia Hao --> We didn't see him yet, but based on episode 2, he is a definite pick.
7. Bing Fan --> We also didn't see him yet, but I will reserve him for 7th
It's tough but I also have Jeong Hyun Uk and Choi Han Gyeol sitting on the sidelines.
In episode two, I have to be even more discriminating because I need to narrow it down to top 7. I just wanted to show you my top 7 before we move onto the next episode's review.
I honestly can't wait for episode two, but I ran out of time. Please look out for my episode two review coming soon. There are still five more performances to watch! Are you ready?
What did you think about this episode? Please leave a comment if you wish to give your thoughts as well.
This is Karen, your awesome Asian entertainment reviewer on Wehaiyo! I love reviewing and introducing Asian entertainment in my blog. Do you want to start a journey with me?
I thought that after reviewing NCT Universe: LASTART - Introduction, I wouldn't do a review for an extensive reality survival competition show again on Wehaiyo! After all, what reality survival competition show could beat the ranks of SM Entertainment trainees? Also, I cringe whenever I need to be subjected to a bad performance. Furthermore, all the other competition shows are basically a popularity vote in my eyes.
However, after checking out Make Mate 1, which premiered on 15-MAY-2024, I decided to review it. I was thinking to myself to use the same basic criteria that I have always used, which is to based my judgement on talent. It may or may not be the most popular opinion, but my review must be written because it comes from my heart. I think just because I interned at an A&R department once, I feel like I am truly some type of A&R person. I have listened to numerous music demo tapes back in my internship days, so in some ways, I have been judging other people's professional performance since a long time ago. However, it's all subjective. Writing rejection letters were also painful even if it was a standard template that I wrote and used myself, knowing that I am crushing somebody's dream.
I was kind of scared to review this Make Mate 1 show because there are also other reality survival competition shows airing at the same time such as I-Land 2 N/a and Girls on Fire. I could get suckered in. All of the shows I mentioned can also be seen with a subscription to Viki, my preferred streaming service. I am not paid to promote Viki, but I personally love that they are dedicated to Asian entertainment with subtitles. Another big reason is that each episode is almost two hours long. How will I survive giving a condensed review?
I am thinking that I probably want to focus a lot on survival reality competition show reviews going forward so if you like that type of thing, you are at the right blog. If I have more time, I will also review the other shows accordingly.
As an introduction to Make Mate 1 (and why do they call it Make Mate 1 or do they plan to make a sequel after this show to make a season 2?), I will try to explain the simple premise. I think it is fun to not know everything yet and observe each espisode with a fresh thoughts. What I do know is that there are 36 young, male contestants, ranging from 15 to 21 years old in this show who are not signed to any entertainment agency, so they are not idol trainees and they vie for a position in a new idol group.
While the idea is fresh, it also gives me anxiety because if the contestants are not trainees who have some experience in performance, would they have a decent level of talent, mental, and physical strength to survive the show? If they had talent, wouldn't they have been picked up by an entertainment agency already? I feel like we are trying to find a diamond in the rough or maybe a trainee that is in transition between entertainment agencies so they can join this show. I'm afraid to sit through a series of flopped performances because my expectations have been so high from NCT Universe: LASTART.
Remembering the names of everybody is also difficult for me, so I hope to learn every contestant's name as quickly as possible. It is probably difficult, but there are probably a lot of show footage that will be cut out from the show even though it is two hours long. I might miss some details, but I will give my best thoughts based on what I observe from this show. You can feel free to look at their MakeMate1 Youtube channel to see extra videos and behind the scenes (and possibly do more obsessing over your "favs" or favorites. My review will be soley about the show.
On Wikipedia, it seem that the show is related to The Unit: Idol Rebooting Project where that show aims to bring back the failing careers of current idols, but I think content-wise, there is no relation to this show.
There is a live voting system for Make Mate 1 through the Makestar app. I will try to provide the links for it:
Fans can vote once a day for their biases in the 1st Bias-vote. Voters can vote for up to seven "mates" or contestants that they want to support.
Instead of creating a new theme song for the show, they covered DAY6's "Time of Our Life" song. This is one of my favorite K-pop songs so I feel giddy just hearing the chorus of it.
Teaser 1
Teaser 2 - Well, hearing a main voice in this teaser gives me confidence that the producers probably found the "diamond in the roughs" or contestants who actually have talent.
Teaser 3 - Oo...the same performance in different pink and blue outfits. I like it! Why do I have the feeling based on this video that I will begin to start pseudo-relationships with some of these contestants. I guess that is how K-pop reels us in.
[MA1 - Main Song] 한 페이지가 될 수 있게 (Time of Our Life) Uniform Ver. (FULL CAM):
Looking at the performance, I felt like Spring is here. I loved how they focused on certain singers instead of just showing me dozens of performers in the video. I don't know who they are yet, but I am already curious. It sounds promising that the voices that I am hearing are beautifully sung.
[MA1 - Main Song] 한 페이지가 될 수 있게 (Time of Our Life) Uniform Ver. (FULL + CLOSE-UP CAM)
There is a close-up cam version, but I won't bother watching it because I can't remember everybody's names or faces anyway.
[MA1 - Main Song] 한 페이지가 될 수 있게 (Time of Our Life) Daily Ver. (FULL CAM)
I'm really glad that they made the "Daily version" because I love their pink and but casual outfits here.
[MA1 - Main Song] 한 페이지가 될 수 있게 (Time of Our Life) Daily Ver. (CLOSE-UP CAM)
Again, I won't bother watching the close-up version, but I will post it here for those who want to see it.
Teaser 4 - The stage is looking awesome and futuristic.
[MA1 - Main Song] 한 페이지가 될 수 있게 (Time of Our Life) Uniform Ver. (FULL + CLOSE-UP CAM)
Geez, how many versions are they going to make with the theme song? This is the uniform and close-up version for those who are too lazy to jump to other videos. Why do I feel like these boys are famous already?
[MA1 - Main Song] 한 페이지가 될 수 있게 (Time of Our Life) Daily Ver. (FULL + CLOSE-UP CAM)
...and the Daily version with close-ups as well. I swear this is the last video in this post.
With all this information in mind, feel free to join me in my journey to find out who will be in the final line-up for Make Mate 1. If you are worried about spoilers, don't be worried because I will not publish any thoughts of the episode until it has aired already for about a week. After all, it will take me some time to write my feelings down. If you still don't want spoilers after that, please do not check out any further episode reviews until you are ready to read my thoughts. Feel free to visit my other blog posts on other topics in the meantime.
In today's age and time, we have to be vigilant online as there are dangers lurking at every corner. Where there is beauty, there is also danger. There are people with good hearts and morals and there are people who are out to ruin your life.
Today, I want to talk about a potential scam or phishing scam that happened to me very recently and I want to bring more awareness about the dangers of social media accounts and celebrities or famous people.
As they always say, if the account is not blue check marked and verified, you could be in communication with just about anybody in the world.
I did not want to give specific details because I feel like this can happen in any situation to anybody and everyone.
Recently, I attended a fairly famous musician's concert in New York City. I had recently followed this person, who had a verified blue checkmark, and enjoyed his music and passion for music. When this person announced that he was going to participate in a concert for another musician in New York, I did not hesitate to buy a ticket to support this musician. I ended up support every musician and performer at the concert because the concert was just great and gave me a different perspective in life, a perspective that I haven't explored in a long time.
Now, if you want me to talk more about the concert itself, I could totally do that in another post if anybody is interested. The purpose of this post is to highlight potential dangers of social media.
Concert Stage
Feeling the high from attending the concert, I sent another reply message of support to the official Instagram account on supporting any future concerts. It was a public reply.
The next day, I saw somebody with a similar account contact me. The only difference is that there is a . between the name and a number at the end of the account. Normally, I am able to catch most impersonators of official accounts, but I think what threw me off was that the description of the account stated that it was:
-A personal account of the famous person that is not in verified status
-There were other people following this person to make it look like a normal account
For a short time, I thought it was really a personal account of the famous person. It's likely a personal account won't be a verified account, but it is a reason to be cautious.
Note: Just because the account says it is a personal account, doesn't mean it is a personal account of the real person.
I went ahead in following this account as well. I found it strange that a famous person would want to follow me. I am not exactly unknown on the internet, but I am not anybody that special.
The next day, the person began to private message me.
Private Instagram Message
It began with a Japanese message, which I needed to Google Translate. This may not be a totally accurate translation, but it gets the message across.
The person claims to be the famous person and wrote that the person saw my profile and the person's heart "chose me" and decided to email me. The person thanks me for my support.
I wait a while before I messaged back. It was strange that a famous person would want to send me a direct message, but if it was a simple message of thanks for the support, I do not mind it.
I wrote "thank you" in English and also "thank you very much" in polite form in Japanese with arigato gozaimasu (ありがとうございます). It was a short response.
The person responded back in Japanese language again about thanking me for the support over the years. I was not a long-time fan so that is not accurate for me. However, I could think that maybe the person is generalizing this message to all his fans.
The person overcomplimented me and called me a "super fan".
In hindsight, these are some red flags of warning:
-If the user account is generalizing facts about who you are
-If the user account is overcomplimenting you without knowing who you are
At this point, I needed to respond in English because I didn't want to struggle with responding in Japanese. Again, I waited a bit and let some time pass before I respond back.
I told the account holder that I am not good at Japanese and asked him to translate what I wanted to write. I mentioned that I recently discovered the official account told him that he was inspiring as he is not only playing music, but has a strong passion for music. I tried to give this person some encouragement since he overcomplimented me.
At this point, the account holder switched to the English language and responded with thanking me for my support and encouragement. The account holder began asking me my name and where I am from.
Honestly, my full name is on my Instagram account. However, I will go with the angle that the person did not pay attention. I gave my first name and a general location where I am from. Even though I attended a concert in New York, it doesn't mean I am from this area.
The next warning flag came in. In my last reply, I wait a while before I answered because I was busy doing other things. The person wrote, "Are you busy?" since I did not answer the questions.
Warning flag:
-If the user account is impatient, something is wrong. If you do not know who you are talking to, there should not be hints of impatience.
Since I took my sweet time to reply, I think the person who I was chatting with has amnesia or another person took over to chat with me without knowing the previous conversation. The person thanked me again for my love and support and proceeds to ask me how long have I been a fan. I honestly answered that question in previous responses.
Warning flag:
-If the account holder is repeating the question there is a good chance this is not a human who wants to engage in conversation with you and may be a different person if the conversation is not flowing naturally.
Playing dumb, I reminded the person that I saw his concert recently and I gave the name of the concert.
Again, the responder only gave generic responses of thanking me for my love and support. He also sent a message ending with a question mark to wonder if I would stop listening to his music. The person asked me how long I was a fan.
Warning flags:
-If the person that is supposedly the famous person you are talking to, but only gives generic responses, there is a good chance that the impersonator does not know details of the actual famous person's career.
-If the person is doubting whether you would continue to be a fan, that person is not legitimate and an attempt at gaslighting the reader. Be strong. You alone should know when you are a fan or not.
-Again, the account holder should not ask you repeat questions. A legitimate repeat question would have some context.
This time, I used a somewhat direct and rude approach to the account holder. I asked, "Why not?" Why would the person doubt the legitimacy of being a fan. If so, I would say, don't bother contacting me if you don't believe I am a fan. I gave a direct response that I have never been to his concert. I don't count this particular concert as the musician was a musician at the concert and not headlining the concert.
The story continues with the person explaining that he was doing a Random check (notice random capitalized with the letter "R" and once again explained that the person came across my profile and that he suspects that I am a nice person. Then, he asks what the time is in my time zone.
Warning flags:
-If the person has grammar or spelling errors in their replies, it could be a sign of spam or phishing (or smishing or whatever you are using to communicate out there).
-If the person is suspecting you. Remember, we don't actually know each other in real life. Never put your trust onto somebody you just met online.
-Asking irrelevant questions or attempt to get your personal information.
There is no reason to ask me what time it is in my time zone unless there is context. That is irrelevant to me being a fan. The person responds to addressing me as "dear loyal fan" and told me that his message is "confidential" and to please "keep it a secret". Then, there is a story about how the account holder has a hard time sleeping and was checking up on the fanbase.
Warning flags:
-Think logically. If you are following a famous person who does not speak English well, why all of a sudden, the person is writing in English so well? While it is not impossible, but just be aware of details.
-Think logically. I gave the person my first name, the person is still addressing me in general terms like "dear loyal fan". It could be the person is working off a pre-written script.
-Asking me to keep the conversation a secret with or without a legitimate reason. Remember, only people who commit crimes or do bad things want to keep it a secret.
The person attempts to ask me my age. Again, what does this have to do with me being a fan? I thought to myself that I will draw the line when he starts asking about family members. Hoping to scare him away, I give him a big number like 42, but that was stupid because I am 42. I should give a fake age next time. The musician proceeds to ask if I am married with kids.
Warning flag:
-Asking personal information that has nothing to do with being a fan.
At this point, I am getting really upset, but curious to see where this is going. I gave a short "yes" answer. The person replied that was "cute" and I didn't see anything cute about it. I think the person is now getting to the point. The account holder asks if I often text on Instagram, but I give safe answers to say I don't normally chat on Instagram. The person asks where else do I chat. I gave a curt answer that I do not usually "chat". There is no way I will let this person into any other form of social media in my life.
Warning flag:
-Asking you to chat somewhere else where I believe they will then attempt to get more of your personal information to scam you financially.
Thinking about other chats that have the option to pay people and in certain chats that use your phone number, they might have access to it.
The person shows his or her true colors by telling me that they want to continuing chatting and knowing me more. The person suggests the LINE application. I give a quick response that I don't have the LINE app. As I mentioned, there is no way I would allow this person in my life like a stalker.
The impersonator promptly asks me to install LINE from my Play store. I have an iPhone so I don't use Play store, but I do not tell this person that detail. The person continues on and says it's "safer" to chat there and that the person can text me when he is less busy and we can get to know each other better.
What?
I don't think I need to explain to you why I feel red flags. This person somehow wants a deeper relationship with me on a different app. Get to know each other better? Are we on a dating app?
The last line I could tolerate from the impersonator is the impersonator asking me to download the app on Play store again.
Fact check: Instagram has end-to-end encrypted chats as per the link below so there is no reason to believe our chat messages are unsafe.
-The impersonator giving you reasons to leave the current chat such as the thought that it is insecure.
-A celebrity or famous person wanting to get to know you better after being informed you are married and have kids. Does that make sense? Is this is fiction story or fanfic?
If insecure, why bother using it in the first place, scammer?
This is where I end the conversation because I won't be entertained further by getting on LINE to chat with this person.
I want to write an immediate post out there to ask everyone to beware of criminals or criminal wannabees who want to scam other people or do a type of phishing by impersonating a celebrity.
I know recently my mom showed me videos of a singer who impersonates the legendary Hong Kong singer Leslie Cheung, but come on, anybody in the fandom or Hong Kong entertainment realm knows that Leslie Cheung passed away years ago and this person is clearly trying to imitate him and immitating or making tribute music to artists is an actual thing, but I won't question the legality of it. People should know who they are dealing with in life.
Karaoke Time
I want to write this post to make you thing twice before you think your favorite celebrity or famous person is chatting with you. Think about it. Unless you have a legitimate reason, met the real life person, or you work in the entertainment industry, there is no reason to believe that a celebrity or famous person would want to get to know YOU and I am not trying to say that in a insulting way, but to be careful. This might only work out in fantasies and well this experience definitely made me think of writing my next fictional story.
If you don't believe me, watch the film, Searching or Searching 2 about cyber crimes and hopefully, it will scare you into being careful. Of course, I am no exception and should have been more careful myself. This is a definite reminder! Luckily I don't let it go too far.
To summarize the warning flags (and there were many - 17 below and there could be more in general):
-A personal account of the famous person that is not in verified status
-There were other people following this person to make it look like a normal account
-Just because the account says it is a personal account, doesn't mean it is a personal account of the real person.
-If the user account is generalizing facts about who you are
-If the user account is overcomplimenting you without knowing who you are
-If the user account is impatient, something is wrong. If you do not know who you are talking to, there should not be hints of impatience.
-If the account holder is repeating the question there is a good chance this is not a human who wants to engage in conversation with you and may be a different person if the conversation is not flowing naturally.
-Think logically. If you are following a famous person who does not speak English well, why all of a sudden, the person is writing good English? While it is not impossible, but just be aware of details.
-Think logically, if I gave the person my first name, the person is still addressing me in general terms like "dear loyal fan". It could be the person is working off a pre-written script.
-Asking me to keep the conversation a secret with or without a legitimate reason. Remember, only people who commit crimes or do bad things want to keep it a secret.
-Asking personal information that has nothing to do with being a fan.
-Asking you to chat somewhere else where I believe they will then attempt to get more of your personal information to scam you financially.
-The impersonator giving you reasons to leave the current chat such as the thought that it is insecure.
-A celebrity or famous person wanting to get to know you better after being informed you are married and have kids. Does that make sense? Is this is fiction story or fanfic?
It is better to pretend to be someone you are not until you are sure the person you are communicating with is verified. Never go somewhere to meet somebody you don't know in real life. Do you own verifications and confirm it yourself. Ask for evidence as necessary. Also, do not keep it to yourself. Let somebody know what is happening so that there is another person(s) watching out for your safety.
It seems only the person being impersonated can report fake accounts on Instagram:
If you think you are speaking to me online, but are not sure. Please ask me to verify who I am!
I did not pay to get a verified checkmark and well, I am simply not famous enough for that checkmark. If it becomes out of control, I will invest in getting a checkmark on social media.
Please feel free to add more in the comments to inform others!
This is my final review on the journey of the NCT Universe: LASTART to NCT Team to NCT Wish members: Sion, Yushi, Riku Jaehee, Ryo, and Sakuya. In my last post about the pre-debut NCT Wish, I didn't feel that my blog was complete without one final post to discuss the aftermath of the NCT Wish team, S.M. Entertainment's newest artist group.
I like to go beyond the NCT Universe: LASTART SM reality survival program to see what the aftermath would be for the fated trainees who move on to their official debut. I wrote about their pre-debut phase in my previous blog post, NCT Wish: The Aftermath of NCT New Team and NCT Universe: LASTART, but it is now time to comment on their official debut on 28-FEB-2024.
I can't believe that I am able to witness the beginning of greatness. When I look back at my previous reviews, I have a sense of nostalgia and I could only think about the member's future potentials, but now, I get to see it live. There is no doubt I will be their fan and will support them to achieve their dreams.
We will start off with their pre-debut video: NCT WISH : Welcome to Cupid Scouting Society!
I was surprised to see that NCT Wish would release a pre-release video with English commentary. I thought they would focus on the Japanese audience, but I think their aim is to potentially go global, which is totally fine by me since I am in the global category. Anyway, I am trying to learn Japanese on my own just so I can keep up with this group.
The video as a whole is so light-hearted and funny and that is what I expect from a relatively young group that includes teenagers like Ryo, Sakuya, Yushi, and Jaehee. When NCT Dream debut their "Chewing Gum" video, there is a sense of rebelliousness combined with cuteness. NCT Wish may be the brightest of all NCT groups and with a name like "Wish" they will be as bright as the stars and bright even in the daytime. In both groups, I can always see what concepts that they want to portray and maybe this is also who they are in real life. When I watch NCT Dream content, I can see how mischievous the members are and when I watch NCT Wish content, I see love and hugs everywhere.
The "NCT WISH : Welcome to Cupid Scouting Society!" video is so short. I really wanted more, but I know I am being spoiled. NCT Wish have been flexing their acting skills so far in their previous MV and pre-debut videos. The video begins with Sakuya who is the newest recruit at the Cupid Scouting Society. This society organization shouldn't be like a school, but a place to exchange ideas. It makes sense to have Sakuya as the latest recruit since he is the youngest member.
Sakuya walks in to immediate focus on Sion and Riku, the most eldest members as they form love matches on what looks like a board game, but reminds me a bit like Jumangi where it moves itself or could have been moved with Sion's magic. It would make sense that Sion and Riku would be the most skilled based on the concept that the oldest members would be the wisest members.
In the Cupid Scouting society, they also give seminars even though it is called "Cupid 101" on how to find couples and shoot them with the arrow of love. Sion is portrayed as the wisest one and the most serious member who requires concentration during this seminar.
In the Precision exercise, Ryo falls short of perfect in this bow and arrow pose, but he has to move on for the next person. Feeling disappointed with his shoulders drooped low, Ryo walks away sulking and Riku takes his place with his best bow and arrow pose. The angle of his bow arm was a bit high, but Riku looks the least bit apologetic or he could be downplaying the discrepancy. While Ryo aims to please, Riku just wants to be himself.
In the test flight exercise, Yushi attempts to gracefully fly with his cupid wings, but is compared to a reckless chicken which leads to him to fall flat on his back. It seems as though Yushi has a long way to go to be a great cupid. I thought the humor attempt to compare Yushi's flight to a chicken was amusing.
In the "no cheating" scene, Ryo is running late for his exam so he runs, but doesn't fly up the stairs. As he was rushing for the exam, he was a bit unprepared and did not bring a pen for the cupid exam. However, he was resourceful to pluck one of the feathers of his wings so that he can use it as a fountain pen. This scene reminds me of Ryo when he was doing the time sensitive challenge to stack mini plastic chairs during the NCT Universe: LASTART era. Ryo knows how to think outside of the box. I hope he passes the exam as he was hardworking so far.
In the "wings of purity" scene, Jaehee oversees the laundry of cupid wings. He seems to be the member that can do no wrong. He will not let bad weather ruin the cupid wings. With two claps, he was able to bring back sunny skies.
Being a cupid doesn't seem to be so bad. I always imagined myself as a cupid when I was young because I always wanted to put the main leads of a drama together. I imagine myself falling to earth just to help couples fall in love. One day, I will publish my book so look out for it.
In the final exercise, the cupids go into a "battle for love" though this scene makes me think that maybe NCT Wish is battling for our interest and our love for NCT Wish. Sakuya is funny for holding a super mini bow and arrow, but he manages to shoot a perfect ten score in the middle. Unfortunately, Riku and Jaehee have the harder task of shooting moving targets. Sion steps up to show them how it's done and one of the targets crashes through a window and lands outside. I am getting images of Sion and his superior batting skills in the pre-release "Hands Up" music video. Sion needs to be the MVP of everything. I find it funny that there are chickens clucking outside. Oh, Yushi.
I watched this video many times and also the behind the scenes video and find it very enjoyable. It is not very related to their actual music video, but I like that they gave a slightly different story as a teaser for their main video, "NCT Wish."
NCT Wish debut on 28-FEB-2024 during the SMTown Live 2024 SMCU Palace concert at the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo. They are debuting under a special situation. Who debuts at a major event like SMTown at such a huge venue like Tokyo Dome where other artists can only dream to perform in?
If NCT Wish were nervous, they did not show it on stage. The added bonus for fans is that they can listen and see the performance of NCT Wish's debut song before the music video is released, which is a rare event in the K-pop music industry. I was not immediately hooked by their debut song, but I gradually started to like it after their Korean promotions. I wasn't used to seeing Yushi wearing the Japanese style leg warmers and I wasn't used to seeing a male person wear it. However, they are young and they can explore different styles. Later on, I see other members wearing it too on different occasions. If they are going to follow a cupid fantasy concept, it's not completely off track.
Not only did they perform "Hands Up" and "NASA," they also collaborated with Super Junior to perform Super Junior's song, "U." The song, "U," reminds me of their kalgunmu (razor-sharp group dancing) moves in the NCT Universe: LASTART era.
When I look at their 41 second practice video, I can tell they practiced really hard. It is just amazing how dedicated they are to being the best. I think their efforts can not be understated. I am impressed that Jaehee, the member with the least dance experience, can keep up with this difficult choreography. Meanwhile, Sion does his 120% effortless dancing style as if this was not a challenge. I encourage everybody to check out the SMTown version as their vocals are so smooth and of course their dance performance was on point. It's rare for me to hear Sakuya sing and Sakuya's voice is not bad at all. I want to hear more of his vocal performance.
Now, to review their debut MVs. NCT Wish's MVs are creative in that there is a slightly different story line for each MV so that means I need to review their MVs twice, which is still a joy for me. I also recommend watching their behind the scenes video and their MV reaction video for more insights to their process of creating these videos.
"WISH (Korean Ver.)" MV
By the time you read this, I have watched the music video dozens of times and I still haven't got sick of it yet.
When the movie starts, we see a young Spanish couple arguing in the car. I thought I was watching a different video so I double checked that I got the correct video. However, I have the correct video because NCT Wish filmed their music video in Barcelona, Spain. The actress is really pretty in my opinion. She reminds me of singer Camila Cabello. Anyway, as the couple is arguing, something or should I state, someone falls onto their car windshield, cracking it and rolling on the ground. The couple cautiously stops the car and steps out of the car to see what happened. Ryo suddenly stands up with a perk and gazes around without the slightest injury, surprising the couple. I guess cupids or angels can't get hurt on Earth.
Behind the couple, another person or thing seemingly falls from the sky and seems to be landing flat (on his face). The young woman faints at the sight while the young man catches her. It's raining cupids! If I were there, I would be fascinated to see cupids. Yushi also gets up and lightly brushes himself off without injury. I guess Yushi still didn't practice his landings well from the Cupid Scouting Society and I do say "Cupid Scouting Society" with a German accent like Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Yushi sees Ryo and they walk down the road together without caring about the couple or their damaged car. Yushi playfully pushes Ryo aside and Ryo lightly pushes Yushi back. However, Yushi doesn't let up and does a forceful takedown of Ryo with his forearm behind Ryo's neck like a wrestling clothesline move from behind. Maybe they both had some type of competition and since Ryo landed first, Yushi was a bit jealous so he had to have some fun with Ryo. As they both fell to the ground, the couple that was arguing in the car have made up with each other once the young woman woke up. Love works in mysterious ways.
I love how the music video segues into Yushi and Ryo rolling towards each other in the grass. Before they were on the highway, but now they seem to be in a park having fun and relaxing. Sakuya makes his entrance into Earth by landing in the water instead. Riku is the last person to come to earth and is still falling backwards from the sky. I think these cupids need more training at the Cupid Scouting Society (German voice).
Already on Earth, Sion and Jaehee are already looking at their target by the beach, scoping out a couple with binoculars. Too bad that we don't see them arrive on Earth. Their target is a woman with a dog and a man, both who are sitting on the beach, but far apart.
Yushi and Ryo see Riku about to land from the park and they look at each other. Yes, it looks to be a painful landing if Riku is landing on his back. A mermaid rescues Sakuya in the water and Riku causes Sion to miss his love shot of the couple since he landed in front of Sion and Jaehee. However, Sion and Jaehee do not appear mad about the mistake. Somehow, Riku manages to land near Sion and Jaehee. After landing, Riku is also not hurt and looks at Jaehee, the couple, before sighing, acknowledging their mistake and taking off to resolve the problem with Sion and Jaehee sprinting behind him.
The mermaid that saves Sakuya tries to do CPR and Sakuya spits out water on the grass.
Yushi and Ryo walk down the street having fun. However, Sakuya, all dried up by now, was standing outside a music record shop across the street and trying to look inside, which is strange since he is across the street.
Riku, Sion, and Jaehee come out of the subway somehow and try to run down the street. I so far do not see any cupid powers from them so down here on Earth, they have to act human. I guess they either had money to take the subway or they bypassed paying for the subway.
In the sky, clouds move away to make a heart shape and Yushi and Ryo sees that as a sign. This story is a little bit similar to one of my stories that I wanted to write, so I find this very interesting. Yushi and Ryo look at each other as if they knew who their targets are so they head over to the record store. Unlike Sakuya, Yushi and Ryo shade their hands over their eyes to look directly into the music record shop from the store window, unabashed. They did better than Sakuya, who must have been a bit shy, but all of this staring-into-the-record-shop is stalker behavior, but at the same time adorable for the viewer. Sion, Riku, and Jaehee catch up to Sakuya, and soon the whole group is together in front of the record shop and looking into it like stalkers. They see the red-hair mermaid lady who has human legs and another young man of interest looking a vinyl records as a customer.
Somehow, NCT Wish take a break to walk towards a water fountain with a baby cupid statue peeing out water from its private area. Sion and Riku glance at each other and Riku also looks downwards in concern to his private area. It is comical and innocent. Soon, the baby cupid is covered with some blue striped baby pants and the water stopped coming out in the water fountain since NCT Wish team supposedly took care of it. Maybe NCT Wish needed to discuss a plan of action so they took a break and have human needs like eat some lunch. Again, I am not sure if they magically had money or how they were able to obtain burgers, but there was a clue that Sion had a coin in his hand so they must have collected all the money from the fountain, but I doubt it is enough money for all six of them to buy burgers unless those burgers are incredibly cheap.
NCT Wish must have waited for the mermaid woman to be off from work as she is walking with her bike across the town square. Yushi gets behind the fountain to take a cupid shot from his small long firearm with a heart-shaped scope. Unfortunately, he misses the timing and shoots a tree that blocked the mermaid lady instead of mermaid lady, who is also a redhead so she must be related to Ariel of Disney. The young boy customer was also in the square and witnesses mermaid lady's weird actions so he unapologetically also tries to capture the scene of mermaid lady kissing the tree on his phone.
After his shooting mistake, Yushi decides that he needs more practice and starts practicing shooting cans and bottles near the lakeside. One of his bullets somehow went to a fish in the lake. I guess Yushi is not that great of a sharpshooter.
Mermaid lady can be seen watching the young man with his electric guitar in front of a goal post of a soccer field from her balcony. I find it strange that the young man is playing his electric guitar by sitting in front of a goal post. How is he getting electricity? All that is unimportant as NCT Wish also dances in the middle of the field.
Sion scoops up the fish that Yushi shot and all five members run towards him on the dock before they all jump into the water for some fun. I guess Sakuya can swim in the storyline, but probably in shallow waters or Sakuya fell unconscious in the water the first time around so he didn't swim. All members dry off by taking a nap on the grass.
Sakuya wakes up to seeing mermaid lady walk towards the lake and gracefully jump in to the water. At the same time, the young man of interest is driving towards them on his moped.
Jaehee gets excited to use a shotgun, but Yushi takes it away from him to take Yushi's shot. Sakuya wastes no time and runs toward the dock. Sakuya leaps in front of the young man of interest and is shot in the heart instead. I tried to make sense of how Sakuya is faster than a bullet, but if we go to the Japanese version of the video where they can freeze time, then this is possible for Sakuya to be in front of the bullet. Amazingly, he has a heart-shaped hole in his heart and behind the hole is the mermaid lady swimming towards Sakuya. The sky is shown with clouds moving away into a heart shape again, shining sunlight on the mermaid lady. Sakuya looks at the screen and smiles as if he intended to link his fate to the mermaid lady who saved him from drowning in the lake.
The music video is so easy to watch and digest without going into deep details like I was doing during "Hands Up". I had so many theories about the "Hands Up" music video. They could easily have made a whole movie out of this storyline. "Wish" is lighthearted, fun, and shows how innocent the NCT Wish members are as cupids. The music video was well-made and NCT Wish did a brilliant job.
'WISH (Japanese Ver.)' MV
For the Japanese version of the music video, I won't rehash the parts of the same storyline so I will only comment on the differences in the music video.
In this version of the video, Sakuya is rescued by mermaid lady, but when he wakes up, he sees both Ryo and Yushi looking at him instead. Sakuya still saw the back of mermaid lady walking away. Yushi shakes his head at Sakuya, knowing how clumsy Sakuya must have been to faint while dropping into the lake from the sky. Either way, all landings of Ryo, Yushi, Sakuya, and Riku must be painful from a human standpoint. Remember, Sakuya was the newest recruit to the Cupid Scouting Society (German voice) so he is the rookie of the team.
The storyline here is a little bit strange as Sakuya saw mermaid lady walk away with purple sweater with pink flowers and short jeans, but as Riku was racing across the park, he jumps over mermaid lady, who is now in a totally separate outfit that is pink with long jeans. Maybe mermaid lady changed clothes fairly quickly and decided to lay down at the park and read a book. For the story to be logical, Sakuya must have landed on Earth first and then Riku landed on Earth some time much later. Riku gives mermaid lady his charming smile before he walks away.
In this alternate time line, Sion, Riku, and Jaehee are standing across the street facing the music record shop where the mermaid lady works and the young man of interest walks into the shop. This also does not make sense. Riku just jumped over the mermaid lady so he must have waited or followed mermaid lady to work, but mermaid lady is again in a different outfit of green. Maybe mermaid lady has to change clothes for work. This can only be possible if some time has passed.
Meanwhile, Sakuya, Yushi, and Ryo are carefreely walking down the street. When the cloud opens into a heart shape, all three members see the sign. The three find themselves starring into the record shop and are promptly joined by the last three members to make a complete group. They still look like stalkers. I love the reactions of Ryo, Sakuya, and Yushi when they see Jaehee, Sion, and Riku behind them as if they are saying, "Do I know you?"
The Wish is Complete - NCT Wish Credit to SM Entertainment and the Youtube video
The story further deviates when mermaid lady decides to go to a gallery where the man of interest is also present. Riku has a mischievous idea to stop time and break up a couple by moving the man and his flowers to propose to another woman. I wasn't too sure what the point of this was, but it did draw the attention of mermaid lady and the guy of interest. That is funny if cupids can also break people up.
Also, I find it fascinating that this is the only scene in which we see the NCT cupids having some type of magical power. Otherwise, they look like normal human beings on Earth who take subways and eat burgers.
Having NCT Wish dance in the gallery with white flower petals seems nice and the little boy cupid painting was a nice touch.
Yushi didn't actually miss any shots with his cupid firearm, but he still needed to practice. This did not really go with the story line, but Yushi still shot a fish and he scratches his ear apologetically. However, it is clear in this version of the video that the fish landed on the dock, which would make sense how Sion was able to pick it up in the Korean music video.
After NCT Wish cupid members take a nap on the grass while drying off after jumping into the lake, it is Riku who stands up, gazing at mermaid lady with fondness. When man of interest shows up in his moped or bike, Jaehee excitedly thought he would get lucky this time to shoot his firearm, but Riku grabs the firearm from Jaehee this time. Poor Jaehee who never gets a shot in, but I think he is just as happy with what seems to be a one-for-all-and-all-for-one attitude.
Riku takes a shot, but lowers his head in disappointment. That looks like me when I go bowling and knew the ball wasn't going to hit the pins that I wanted. The love bullet hits the dog again and the dog's owner and the other man of interest are pulled together again. The couple smile at each other except the dog is also smitten and jumps on the guy's sensitive area. Riku's disappointment turns into a cheesy smile as he looks up again at the scene.
In this version, we have been duped as the couple wasn't mermaid lady and her man of interest, but the dog lady and her man of interest. I welcome the change in storyline to give each character a bigger role.
Overall, now that I too a look at both versions, the "Riku" version, which is the Japanese version doesn't quite make sense as a story with some discrepancies. I much prefer the more logical storyline, which is the "Sakuya" Korean version. However, I did enjoy watching Riku's mischievous self.
I have never been to Barcelona before, but it seems to be a beautiful place. I am sure these videos will encourage tourism and even though there was no dialogue in the music video, the actors all portrayed their roles well.
When it came to NCT Wish music show stages, I would say they did well and surprisingly even winning two music show wins with "The Show"! and Show Champion, which is amazing for a rookie group that just debut. There was only one disappointment that I had for Jaehee's performances in which I personally thought he didn't hold his notes long enough like in the record where he sang "so I make this wish tonight..." and his "tonight" felt too short for me. I felt Jaehee improved a lot on his dance and I am also happy to see that he is not always dancing in the back anymore. By the way, I also came to love the B-side song, "Sail Away," as well. It's no shock that I bought both the Japanese and Korean versions of their CD. I almost bought the Wichu keyring version as well, but decided not to as I felt it was overkill for me to own so many versions and I thought Wicchu looks sad and I rather have a happy Wichu. Maybe Wichu is happy, but he looks sad to me. I also wish they had an album that included both Korean and Japanese versions on CD.
I also watched their "Wishlist" showcase and I was proud of them and proud of Sion especially for handling all the technical difficulties with Wichu and leading most of the conversations during the show. I won't go too deep into it as my post is already super long, but I enjoyed it.
If you still need to get the album, they have it on Amazon below (Note: the links below are affiliate links in which I receive a small commission should you decide to make a purchase at the 3rd party website):
I again congratulate NCT Wish on their debut! I think I have done the full circle to say farewell to NCT Universe: LASTART and hello NCT Wish! I will be watching them closely to support them and I can't wait to see what else they will bring us next, but I won't be writing such detailed reviews anymore, unless you all have any interest in me doing so or if I decide to feature their song on Wehaiyo! I hope that I brought NCT Wish enough attention to interest you into checking them out as well.

This drama is based on a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Io Sakisaka.
Synopsis:
In middle school, Yoshioka Futaba is on the verge of being an outcast in her class for having a pretty face and supposedly popular as her female classmates see it. One day, to avoid the rain while returning home from school, Yoshioka Futaba runs to a nearby temple and also meets Tanaka Kou standing there as well. She recognizes him and addresses him since he is her classmate. He covers her with a spare shirt so that she can dry her hair and their friendship blossoms. It was not long before they start glancing at each other in the classroom and Tanaka Kou waits for Yoshioka Futa after school to invite her on a date to the Lantern Festival since the next day is officially their summer school break.
Unfortunately, Tanaka Kou never showed up to the Lantern Festival and also did not come back to school when starting the new school year, leaving Yoshioka Futaba heartbroken. Still, Yoshioka Futaba wanted to fit in at school so until high school, she forces herself to hang out girls who despise any type of girls that are deemed as popular and pretty.
Surprisingly, Tanaka Kou also transfers to Yoshioka Futaba's high school as well, but under a different surname, Mabuchi Kou and a different personality where he does not care for school or friends anymore. Little by little, Yoshioka Futaba and Mabuchi Kou learn to appreciate who they are and to move beyond the obstacles that lay before them.
Reasons to watch it:
This is a beautiful coming-of-age story with so many obstacles and imperfections for the main couple and also the side characters, but this is what growing up is all about. I think the "Blue Spring" title is in reference to Mabuchi Kou's sadness.
Yoshioka Futaba is already a flawed character who works so hard to make her female classmates like her and she lacks confidence to show who she is and never thought that she could become a leader and class president had it not been for Mabuchi Kou's indirect encouragement. She is not particularly smart, but she works hard on any task that she decides to do.
Mabuchi Kou, hurt by family matters, closes his heart for most of the series, but he shows on many occasions that he cares about his friends. He also does not realize that he hurt his family members, especially his older brother without thinking about his older brother's feelings. Mabuchi Kou seems to be punishing himself for not realizing that his mother was sick. He takes a long time to realize who he wants to be and to find out his attitude in life, but he would not have done it without Yoshioka Futaba, who never gave up on him.
Yoshioka Futaba's friendships with her two female friends are also commendable. Even though her new best friend, Makita Yuri, also had a crush on Mabuchi Kou, they did not let their friendship get in the way of liking the same man. This is what I call a mature friendship.
The arrival of fellow student, Kikuchi Toma, in Yoshioka Futaba's life was also a beautiful relationship to watch. I think Yoshioka Futaba could have been also very happy with Kikuchi Toma as her boyfriend if she truly decides to give up on Mabuchi Kou and want a perfect boyfriend instead. Kikuchi Toma is a very ideal boyfriend. However, Yoshioka Futaba is not interested in perfect men.
Kominato Aya is a very good and loyal friend to Mabuchi Kou. Mabuchi Kou should be very grateful that despite yelling at his friend, Kominato Aya several times, Kominato Aya never gave up on their friendship. Kominato Aya also has low self-esteem since he is constantly being rejected by his friends, but his loyalty to his friends makes him somebody really precious in this drama.
Reasons not to watch it:
Murao Shuko's character is very confusing to me. I think there is a lot of undeveloped story to her character and how she would change from liking Mabuchi Kou's brother, Tanaka Yoichi, who is also a teacher at their school to her loyal classmate, Kominato Aya. The only reason why Murao Shuko could not be with Tanaka Yoichi is because of their student/teacher relationship. However, in real life, Tanaka Yoichui could have still pursued Murao Shuko later on in life since he resigned from the school to somehow go overseas, which is very strange to me.
During the series, Tanaka Yoichi continuously gives Kominato Aya chances to pursue Murao Shuko. Kominato Aya knows that Murao Shuko has set her feelings on Tanaka Yoichi and even I thought there was no hope for them. However, I didn't see any particular pivotal moment that would make me believe that Murao Shuko no longer loves Tanaka Yoichi. While I am happy that Murao Shuko made her choice at the end of the drama, I have a hard time believing how she can change over time.
Season 1 and Season 2 must be watched together if the audience wants a complete story because Season 2 is the continuation of the story from season 1. On top of that, season 1 ended on a cliffhanger.
I didn't like the drama of Narumi Yui entering Mabuchi Kou's life. At the time when Mabuchi Kou would have been certain that he wanted to date Yoshioka Futaba, he allows Narumi Yui back into his life. I do not really understand why Mabuchi Kou wanted to be so secretive about it. He could have been more frank and if anything, introduce Narumi Yui to more friends so that she can have a better outlook on life just as Mabuchi Kou did. Mabuchi Kou also could have called Narumi Yui back at a more convenient time instead of dropping everything he was doing just because she called. I felt really bad for Yoshioka Futaba during this time period. The worst part is that Mabuchi Kou made a conscious decision to not have a romantic relationship with Yoshioka Futaba. What was he thinking?
Favorite Couple and Chemistry Factor:
Favorite couple has to go to Yoshioka Futaba and Mabuchi Kou, two friends who are imperfect, but perfect for each other. They rely on each other and I think their lives would have been so sad without each other. I do not know why Mabuchi Kou came back to the same high school as Yoshioka Futaba or maybe he made a conscious decision that he cannot live without her in his life, but not necessarily to date her, but to be around her. There is little talk about Mabuchi Kou's father, but I guess they are financially well off enough to live separate lives. Mabuchi Kou tries to stray so many times to hang out with seemingly delinquent youths, but I love how Yoshioka Futaba would never let him do so.
Yoshioka Futaba and Mabuchi Kou were always more than friends, but it took them a while to be comfortable with it, accept it, and be confident with their decision. They make a very sweet couple if we ever get to see it.
Favorite Scenes:
My favorite scene was a sweet scene at the beginning where Tanaka Kou and Yoshioka Futaba were secretly and not-so-secretly staring at each other in the classroom. I can feel love in the air.
When Yoshioka Futaba made an internal bet with herself that if Mabuchi Kou did not get off the train when she made an excuse to go back to school, she will forget about her feelings for him and as she opened her eyes to see if Mabuchi Kou was there after the train left, Mabuchi Kou stood in front of her nonchalantly saying that he would accompany her.
I can't forget about the cliffhanger scene in Season 1 where Mabuchi Kou and Yoshioka Futaba argue about their accidental kiss and as soon as Yoshioka Futaba mentioned that Kikuchi Toma told her that it was meaningless, Mabuchi Kou, triggered, had a strong inclination to prove Kikuchi Toma wrong and kisses Yoshioka Futaba with meaning and purpose so that Yoshioka Futaba cannot mistake it as an accident anymore.
The most pivotal scene in which Yoshioka Futaba and Mabuchi Kou meet at the temple despite Yoshioka Futaba telling Mabuchi Kou that she would forget him is very impactful and also highly anticipated. Prior to this scene, Yoshioka Futaba admits to Kikuchi Toma that she liked Mabuchi Kou for his imperfections and his inner strengths and weaknesses are still a mess. She sees how Mabuchi Kou is changing bit by bit for the better and she didn't want to miss any of it. Back at the temple scene, Mabuchi Kou admits his mistakes and asks Yoshioka Futaba if she would be willing to watch how dependable he will become. I think the audience knew in their hearts what Yoshioka Futaba was thinking at this moment.
Least Favorite Scenes:
Leaving Yoshioka Futaba stranded on a date twice by Mabuchi Kou is brutal. I am highly surprised that she would still want to be friends with somebody like that. In today's world, we have internet and text messages so I don't know why Mabuchi Kou never bothers to explain himself to her and he had summer months to do so.
I wanted to include that every time they show the school's indoor shoes with the rubber front, I thought it was not attractive at all. I wish they had better looking school shoes.
The Lesson:
Life is imperfect and finding who you are and improving yourself is a process, little by little. It's better to have friends by your side during these times.
OST songs:
I also loved the fast piano opening song, but I can't find it anywhere.
