HALLYU ZOMBIE DRAMA REVIEW: Emergency Couple Episodes 14-15 (3/4)

too many feelsLast week Oh Chang Min made my heart skip more beats than a scratched CD and this week he broke it into a thousand pieces! I'm really not sure what next week will hold but I can tell you this, Emergency Couple has found a way to tug at every single one of my heartstrings and I'm on the verge of a total feels meltdown!
stare downWe left off last week, with Chang Min burning with jealously as he watched Dr. Gook drop Jin Hee off at home so, of course, that's right where we picked up this week. I would have felt a little bit bad for Chang Min, having to watch Dr. Gook make those first innocent moves on Jin Hee, if Chang Min hadn't barged in on and ruined what has got to be the cutest scene in this entire drama so far... Dr. Gook dragging Jin Hee out to eat, just because he thought his bad day would improve if he spent a little time with her. Seriously, that entire scene had me squealing like a crazed fangirl as I watched Dr. Gook, in all of his adorable awkwardness, try to spend a little quality time with Jin Hee and I wanted nothing more than to slap Chang Min for waltzing in and ruining everything! Grr!
i can't stand youThe only upside to Chang Min's interruption was that it forced Dr. Gook to straight-up admit his feelings for Jin Hee which is something I don't think he would have ever had the courage to do otherwise. The down-side to this whole debacle, at least from Chang Min's perspective, was that it forced Jin Hee to say some very harsh, albeit honest, things to him that I'm sure he immediately wished he'd never heard. I mean who wants to hear that the person you love honestly can't stand to be around you? I'm pretty sure no one wants to hear such harsh words, let alone a man desperately trying to win back his ex-wife. I wanted to feel sorry for Chang Min at that moment but honestly, I think it was good for him to hear the painful truth. Only after understanding where Jin Hee is coming from can Chang Min hope to move forward. If he's only focused on himself and his feelings, he's never going to understand why Jin Hee can't move forward with him. At  least now he's got an idea of where he stands with her and how impossible it seems, at least at that moment, for them to be together.
going their own wayFrom that moment on, Chang Min went from causing my heart endless flutters to causing it endless pain. Every time he appeared on-screen after that, he was so downcast and dejected and pathetic, I just wanted to cry! I think it's just because the reality of his situation and the hopelessness he's feeling at the moment is so plainly written across his face, it hurts me to look at him. I know that really he's being a bit melodramatic but he's trying, in his own way, to give Jin Hee the space she needs and I just want to hug him for that.
only after you've healedBut Chang Min isn't the only guy needing a hug this week. Turns out Dr. Gook has quite a painful history he's been hiding and now that we know the truth, how can we not love him? Abandoned and rejected for most of his life, with no one around to love or support him, Dr. Gook has spent far too many years alone and suddenly I find myself hoping he'll end up with Jin Hee. Well at least until he gets all self-righteous about his stance on divorce. Yes, I understand where he's coming from. It was his parents' divorce that ruined his life. I get that. But the way he went all cold towards Jin Hee, treating her like just another intern the moment he learned she was a divorcee... Not cool Dr. Gook. Not cool.
i'm divorced tooAt least Jin Hee was brave enough to finally admit she'd been married before. I'm sure it took a lot of guts to admit something as scandalous as being a divorcee but I think things at work will be better for her in the long run. It's been too hard for her and Chang Min to live like they're strangers. Now that everyone knows the truth, they can all get their two minutes of gossip in and then move on with their lives which is a good thing, especially if you're Yong Kyu and Ah Reum.
take my hankieAs much as I don't like Ah Reum, she really isn't the worst person in the world. It seems like she's finally come to accept the fact that Chang Min really does like Jin Hee and there's nothing she can do to change his mind. (About time!) But what really softened my opinion of Ah Reum was the way she treated Yong Kyu this week, as if she actually cared about him, at least as a friend. I was surprised to see that Ah Reum really could be a decent person if she wanted to be and I was glad to see her trying to help Yong Kyu deal with rather traumatic ordeal.
ptsdPoor Yong Kyu! As if living the life of an unrequited lover wasn't enough, he had to go and make a nearly fatal mistake in the treatment of a patient and ruin all of the confidence he once had in himself. As depressing as the men in this week's episodes were, I think Yong Kyu takes the cake for being the most pathetic. I felt so bad for him, seeing him go pale and break out into a cold sweat at the very thought of messing up again, I just wanted to give him a hug and tell him to press on because, being human, we're all bound to make mistakes from time to time. (See, there are a lot of guys who needed hugs this week!)
should we just watch him dieBleak though this week may have been, it wasn't until the end of Episode 15 that I actually felt like my heart was breaking. Watching Jin Hee and Chang Min try to save his father... Oh my word! The tears could not be stopped. The previews for next week make it look like he doesn't die at the exact moment they ended things this week but that doesn't mean he won't die soon! Ugh! The very idea makes me want to cry! I wanted Chang Min's dad to be the one to bring Jin Hee and Chang Min together but not because he dies! The very idea breaks my heart...
wake up fatherSo what did you think of this week's episodes? Did our dueling doctors make your heart flutter or break? What about Yong Kyu? Do you think he'll be able to snap out of this post-traumatic funk? Do you think Ah Reum will be instrumental in bringing him back to normal or will he find his way on his own? What do you think of Ah Reum? Do you think she's really going to give up on Chang Min, now that she knows he's never going to come to her, or will she hang on until the end? And how about Chang Min's dad? Is this really the end of him? I'd love to know what you think so be sure to leave me a comment below!

HALLYU ZOMBIE DRAMA REVIEW: Emergency Couple Episodes 14-15 (2/4)

I'm back with part two of Emergency Couple where our main characters jump to all sorts of conclusions this week. I still think Emergency Couple is an engaging drama even if it is medically boring. Every character seems to have a deeper side to them that is worth discussing.

From our previous posts and drama episodes, I knew that Dr. Gook Chun Soo (Lee Pil Mo) had marriage inhibitions, but this week, he reveals a deeper reason for that, which is the fact that he grew up alone without parents. Even though love rival, Oh Chang Min (Choi Jin Hyuk), has a variety of family issues, at least he had a family. By not having a family, Dr. Gook had to bear the pain alone, which is unfortunate. When Dr. Gook realized that Oh Jin Hee (Song Ji Hyo) is a divorcee, their relationship beyond work is pretty much over as Dr. Gook cannot accept a person who divorced in what he thinks is in haste only to ruin the lives of a person's children. Of course, Dr. Shim Ji Hye (Choi Yeo Jin) is an exception because Dr. Gook felt that he forced her towards that path, and technically, Dr. Shim never married the father of her child.

At some point, Dr. Gook will need to take Dr. Shim's advice of locating and meeting his parents for closure because Dr. Gook will otherwise be stuck in limbo, unable to move on. Anyway, love is not something that can be turned off like a light bulb. Dr. Gook will soon realize that he cannot just stop loving Oh Jin Hee at will. Hiding his days away as a resident chief doctor isn't going to solve anything. Now, I know why he frequents the bar so much.

Chang Min seems to have made a grave mistake this week too when he followed Dr. Gook and Jin Hee after work only to harass Dr. Gook in public about dating Jin Hee. Jin Hee never said she was willing to start over with Chang Min, yet Chang Min let his anger and tunnel vision get the best of him, believing that Jin Hee was still his woman just because he once again, realized his own feelings for her. Luckily, Chang Min understood his mistakes and is willing to back off to give Jin Hee the space that she deserves. Chang Min is such an explosive character.

I was surprised at the two karaoke songs Chang Min sang: remakes of "Should I Say My Love To Her Again" originally by Kim Dong Ryul and "Scent of a Flower" originally sung by Lim Jeong Hee.

On the other hand, after Oh Jin Hee came to the conclusion that she cannot restart a relationship with Chang Min because she can't handle it and their families wouldn't be able to handle it, Jin Hee had no problem pretending to be in a relationship with Chang Min in front of the pastor who married them. How come she changes her stance so easily? Furthermore, what is the big deal about telling the pastor the truth?

The mother fight scene was epic. I enjoyed baby Gook's reactions to the fight scene as well. How could baby Gook act so well, looking at whoever is talking and crying on cue? Anyway, it's sad that the fight scene had to be done in such a public place, especially at the work place, embarrassing Jin Hee and Chang Min while dropping a gossip bomb on everyone else.

When Chang Min's father collapsed, I thought it was over for him and I was close to tears. I'm still holding on to hope that Chang Min's father will live. Next episode, please!

As for poor intern, Im Young Kyu (Yoon Jong Hoon), any doctor can make a mistake, but Young Kyu took his experience too much to heart and is having a mental breakdown. Although Young Kyu prescribed the wrong medicine, he is not completely at fault. The patient should know what kind of medication he is on at the time.

Furthermore, there are always warning labels on every drug (at least in the U.S.) that states that a patient should not try to take more than the prescribed dosage at any given time even when a dose is missed.

Lastly, I must talk about Han Ah Reum (Clara) and her growing maturity. She is one character that plays with my emotions. Do I hate her or do I not hate her? After her brutal dumping of Young Kyu, I have turned my back on her, but lately, she has been regaining my favor. Han Ah Reum knows that she does not have Chang Min's heart and she doesn't want to have a relationship with him without it. As the prime mister's daughter, Ah Reum could have been one of those typical rich girls who flaunt their money and power, yet Ah Reum remains mature and respectful towards her parents. Perhaps, Ah Reum can mature into an awesome, cool person like Dr. Shim one day.

HALLYU ZOMBIE DRAMA REVIEW: Emergency Couple Episodes 14-15 (1/4)

While there was some annoyance and some feels, I think the only thing I can really say about this week's episodes is "FINALLY!" I am so excited so many things happened and they can all be summed up with that one exclamation, so let's jump to it!

HALLYU ZOMBIE DRAMA REVIEW: Emergency Couple Episodes 12-13 (4/4)

This week Zombie Mamma and I talk about the excruciating romance that happened between Dr. Gook and Chang Min. Tanya has been zombified this week from hanging out with Zombie Mamma and Boyfriend, so she will take this week off to recover.

Zombie: Oh my word! The feels this week nearly killed me with an overwhelming abundance of feels! My poor heart could barely handle all of the flutters!

Karen: And all that advice! It’s enough to fill my head with so many thoughts about relationships!

Zombie: Dr. Shim is a very insightful person. She has a well-balanced perspective on life but she’s, surprisingly, not the only one. When Kim Kwang Soo started giving Jin Hee all of his advice on marriage, I was completely blown away. I had no idea he had so much depth to him! I’m really starting to like him!

Karen: I was wondering where Kwang Soo got all of his wisdom from since I have never seen him fight with Jin Ae. Wisdom comes with experience.

Zombie: Maybe he’s just a deeper character than I first gave him credit for. I mean, initially, I thought he was such a flake but as this show is progressing, he’s continually surprising me with his genuine love for his family and the level head he’s got on his shoulders. I think Jin Ae really found a keeper! He seems to be the perfect balance for her.

Karen: There’s no doubt that Kwang Soo is a very responsible husband and father. Perhaps, Jin Ae is the more immature one as she is the one always looking for sneaky ways to get around the situation. She even approached an ex-brother-in-law to borrow money. I suppose she had to do what she had to do, but going to an ex-brother-in-law for money is super awkward.

Zombie: I think it might not have been the best decision Jin Ae ever made, going to Chang Min for money but given the relationship between them, I wasn’t really appalled by her actions. They seem to have such a good relationship… As if it was never damaged by Chang Min and Jin Hee’s divorce. I have a feeling they’ll always be good friends.

Karen: I would have loved to see what life was like before the divorce. At least Jin Ae respects Chang Min and doesn’t try to lie her way through a financial emergency. In turn, Chang Min also fesses up to taking Dr. Gook’s jacket and even admits that he is not as mature as Dr. Gook. I have to give Chang Min points for that as well.

Zombie: I know, it seems like Chang Min is really growing up a lot, all of a sudden. I think he’s taking his feelings for Jin Hee a lot more seriously than he did the first time around because he wants to make sure he does things right this time around. He knows that if he screws anything up this time, he has no hope of ever getting Jin Hee back. Honestly, I’m not really sure how’s he’s even going to manage winning Jin Hee back at this moment. I know he’s trying, desperately at times (how else do you explain that kiss???) but are his efforts really going to be enough? I’m not so sure. Especially when Dr. Gook goes all adorably mushy on Jin Hee. Ugh! That ride home in the rain… Omo! I nearly died from Dr. Gook’s shy semi-confession. The way he answered both of her questions… Ack! I can’t even… SO STINKING CUTE!!!

Karen: The way I see it, both men are coming on strong. I really like the fact that Dr. Gook has a chance to date Jin Hee, but I am also sad that all of Chang Min’s efforts seem wasted. Chang Min seems to have fallen into second-lead territory where usually the second-lead tries to rekindle a relationship with a main lead, but the main lead has already fallen in love with the other main lead. In the end, the second-lead man just has to bear it. I can’t even tell Chang Min to keep pursuing Jin Hee either because I feel like she needs her space at this moment and he might just annoy her too much.

Zombie: And this is exactly where I’m torn! I can’t decide if I want to cheer for Chang Min or Dr. Gook. They’ve both managed to produce an excessive number of heart-palpitations on my end so I’m really dying. I usually cheer for the man who makes me swoon the most but in this case, there are two worthy (in their own way) candidates to win Jin Hee’s affections and I cannot, for the life of me, decide who would actually be better. They both have their good qualities but which one would be better for Jin Hee in the long-run? I honestly have no idea!

Karen: Eventually, one man has to bow out and I believe that man is going to be Chang Min. I predict that Chang Min will have to let go of his Jin Hee dreams because his family is about to be shaken up by the news of his father’s illness. Chang Min will have to concentrate more on how to save his family soon rather than saving his love life.

Zombie: I honestly don’t know how to feel about that. I want to cheer for Chang Min but at the same time, you’re totally right. There are a lot of things Chang Min is going to have to deal with in the very near future and I can see this going one of two ways… 1. Chang Min’s family trials are going to drive a wedge between him and Jin Hee and they will part ways as friends or 2. Chang Min’s family trials are going to be the glue that sticks him and Jin Hee together for all of eternity. At this point, I’m not sure where this is headed but those are the two ways I see this going.

Karen: I think these scenarios all depend on Chang Min’s mother. Until she accepts the fact that she cannot control her son and that her son deserves to be happy, the entire family will be in shambles. In a way, she is a necessary person in keeping the family together. She has the ability to stop her divorce with Chang Min’s father and she has the ability to bless her son’s relationship with Jin Hee.

Zombie: Is it wrong to say I wish she were the one with the terminal health problem? It seems to me everyone’s life would a whole lot simpler with her out of the way.

Karen: Well, Sung Sook did almost die, but Jin Hee saved her. I hope to see a happy ending though. I’m not sure how that’s going to happen unless Jin Hee saved Oh Tae Suk and Chang Min’s life as well.

Zombie: That’s probably going to be the only way Chang Min’s mother will ever accept Jin Hee and even then… I’m not so sure… In that respect, Jin Hee would be much better off with Dr. Gook. Who needs that kind of crazy in their life?

Karen: Dr. Gook seems to have a boring and predictable life. Work. Drink. Sleep? If Jin Hee dated him, I wonder if she would die of boredom or will Dr. Gook change as a result of dating again? He didn’t seem to change much when he was dating Dr. Shim (even though Dr. Shim made him participate in side activities). Furthermore, Dr. Gook wouldn’t even take the plunge into marrying Dr. Shim. Will Dr. Gook eventually reach a dead end with Jin Hee as well?

Zombie: Again, this is why I’m torn. I can see things going well for Jin Hee if she chose Chang Min or Dr. Gook but at the same time, I could see them not working out, in the long-run, either. Both men have their good points and their not-so-good points which is why I’m having the hardest time trying to decide which one I’m going to cheer for the most. I can’t, for the life of me, figure out who would be the better fit for Jin Hee and it’s driving me absolutely crazy! On top of that, both men are making my heart flutter like a butterfly on speed which is making watching this drama an excruciatingly painful experience in some ways and completely delightful in others. I can’t decide if the overabundance of feels is a good thing or if eventually my poor heart is just going to explode…

Karen: More episodes will cure this feeling. I’m sure it will become clearer next week!

Zombie: I’m really hoping so… I’m not sure how much more of this exquisite torture I can take! It’s not every day you have a drama with two worthy men making your heart go pitter-patter. Usually one out-shines the other but not this time!

Karen: I know, though I have my pick! Usually, I fall for Dr. Gook every week, but Chang Min has got my heart this week. The drama has a completely different vibe from the beginning of the story. It’s all up to Jin Hee to decide which is the best path for her now.

So which way would you like to see this drama go? Which adorable gentleman, do you think, will ultimately win Jin Hee’s heart? We’d love to know what you think so be sure to leave us a comment below!

HALLYU ZOMBIE DRAMA REVIEW: Emergency Couple Episodes 12-13 (2/4)

On this week's episodes of Emergency Couple, it seems as though a lot of characters are dishing a lot of love advice. After all, what's a medical drama without some love advice? In part two of the Emergency Couple Hallyu Zombie review, I will give my thoughts on all the love advice being passed around.

Let's begin with Emergency Couple's all-around doctor, Shim Ji Hye (Choi Yeo Jin), who is crossing over towards become a love doctor. She is helping and coaxing both leading men, intern Oh Chang Min (Choi Jin Hyuk) and chief Gook Chun Soo (Lee Pil Mo) towards Oh Jin Hee (Song Ji Hyo). However, in her decision to help Dr. Gook pursue Jin Hee, Dr. Shim started showing her flaw. Actually, she is not as cool as she seems since she is actually still in love with Dr. Gook. I guess the only obstacle for Dr. Shim is her daughter, whom she loves so much. Perhaps, Dr. Shim wants Dr. Gook to have a pure marriage with someone else or Dr. Shim is not sure of how to face her daughter if she started dating again.

Dr. Shim's advice to Chang Min is that whoever loves more is the weak one where the weak one is the happier one and she also advised Chang Min to let Jin Hee decide who she loves before revealing the truth to Dr. Gook. There is no doubt that Chang Min is the one who has fallen in love with Jin Hee again, but that doesn't mean he will necessarily be the happier one. Chang Min has to constantly watch Jin Hee show her concern for Dr. Gook and listen to Jin Hee's numerous rejections for why she can't be with Chang Min again. Watching Chang Min try so hard actually breaks my heart. Actually, Jin Hee already confessed that she liked Dr. Gook on the rooftop prior to Chang Min's love confessions. The fact that Jin Hee rejected Chang Min and openly said her thoughts about liking Dr. Gook tells me that Chang Min's chances of rekindling his relationship at this point are very slim. I can't advise Chang Min to give up though, but I do want Chang Min to give Jin Hee some space to think the relationship over.

Meanwhile, Dr. Gook admitted to Jin Hee that he would rather be with a person who makes his heart flutter rather than a person who is familiar. Honestly, who would want to be with a person just because that person is familiar? I can't imagine anybody choosing the familiar option. Anyway, I believe Jin Hee does have feelings for Dr. Gook past a working relationship. Her smile as she walked away from Dr. Gook says it all. I'm sure, at this point, Jin Hee wants to start a new relationship, but this might also be the reason why she might want to return to Chang Min as well. I'm sure Dr. Gook is a funny and cute man, but he seems very stiff when it comes to relationships. I believe it takes a bold person like Dr. Shim to really bring Dr. Gook out of his shell. No matter how much Jin Hee likes Dr. Gook, she might want to return to the fun, explosive, and emotionally-engaging Chang Min.

The dynamic in the Oh Jin Hee family is becoming weird and uncomfortable. In the beginning, Jin Hee's family seemed broken up since Jin Hee's sister, Jin Ae (Jun Soo Jin) ran away and acted irresponsibly, but now that the family is living together, Jin Hee's mother and sister seemed to have patched their relationship up rather quickly. Perhaps, they wanted to keep the peace because of Jin Ae's infant, baby Gook, but whenever two people try to cover up their true feelings, the relationship only gets more explosive as time passes. Also, I'm surprised at how quickly Jin Ae and Kwang Soo got their life back together. Did they really need to move in with the Oh family when it seems as though they can get jobs so easily?

Jin Hee's brother-in-law, Kim Kwang Soo (Park Doo Shik), starts giving Jin Hee relationship advice as he drives her to work. Honestly, I'm not sure if Kwang Soo is even in a position where he is an expert on love. It doesn't seem like he fought with Jin Ae enough times to know what it's like to be on the brink of divorce. Kwang Soo says that marriage is not a failure, but it can be a mistake. I don't agree with that statement simply because everybody's situation is different. People divorce for a variety of reasons, but I wouldn't comment on it to represent everyone's situation. Initially, Jin Hee says that she divorced Chang Min because they were too young, but even that reason sounded like a mere excuse.

Thinking back to the post-divorce scene, Chang Min was a first-class jerk when he tried to give Jin Hee some life advice. He tells Jin Hee to be strong in life and live with energy before coldly driving away in his car. Even Chang Min's mother needed to get her frustration off her chest and accused Jin Hee of ruining her son's life. I guess that if Jin Hee was a stronger woman, she would have told Chang Min and his family to go to hell, but she didn't. It was interesting to see how she never uttered a word the whole time.

I'm also surprised that seven years after Chang Min proposed to Jin Hee, the exact place where he proposed seems to still exist. I thought Korea was a constantly changing world.

On a side note, I love Chang Min's jacket that he wore on his supposed day off and I would love to buy one for my husband.

In a true American fashion, Chang Min's other love interest, Han Ah Reum (Clara), does not mind that Chang Min is a divorcee. She advised Chang Min that she would like to get to know him better and knowing this information allows her to get closer to him. Ah Reum is another cool type of person and I can't wait to see her break that image like Dr. Shim did when she got into the taxi to allow Jin Hee and Dr. Gook some alone time.

Lastly, in other topics, the Emergency Couple patient story lines aren't engaging enough. The possible patient with the Jacobs disease was exciting to watch, but there is little to no follow-up on existing or past patients. I would have wanted to know what happened to the ex-wife who donated her kidney to her ex-husband. There is also a possible hint that Chang Min's father is ill since Chang Min's father is on the ICU patient list.

Check our blogs soon for Tanya's thoughts and another round of hilarious chatting with Zombie Mamma, Tanya, and I. I'm sure we will dig into the romance aspect a little more this now that Dr. Gook has taken steps to pursue Jin Hee. Is there a way Chang Min can recapture Jin Hee's heart? Check back soon for our thoughts on the situation. 헐 Hul!
