Hallyu Zombie Drama Review: Emergency Couple Episodes 18-19 (2/3)

Slowly, progress is being made in Emergency Couple as we are winding down to our last two weeks. I am glad that Jin Hee finally got a clue that she hasn't completely moved away from Chang Min even after all of these years. I don't understand why it took her seeing her old wedding ring to suddenly bring these feelings back, but I guess something had to be the trigger. While we are talking about feelings here, I understand Chang Min has come to an a good place, the girl you have been chasing after says she likes you. Stop pushing her away! You may want to think that you are doing the right thing, but you are also making it harder on yourself.

Hallyu Zombie Drama Review: Emergency Couple Episodes 16-17 (2/3)

This week's Emergency Couple was all about personal struggle. The biggest shock of all was the passing of Tae Suk, Chang Min's father. After silently battling his illness, he finally succumbed to complications.

HALLYU ZOMBIE DRAMA REVIEW: Emergency Couple Episodes 14-15 (4/4)

Zombie: So this week was kind of an emotional roller-coaster for me. I wanted to cheer for Chang Min and then he was a punk and I wanted to slap him and then he broke my heart and then his dad nearly died… If that weren’t bad enough, Dr. Gook had to go and get all bent out of shape over Jin Hee’s confession about being divorced and… GRRRR! Too many feels for one week!

Karen: A lot really happened this week and in some ways, unexpected. I never expected Dr. Gook to be so traumatized by not having parents by his side to the point where he can’t even stand a woman (or a man, I guess) who is divorced. Chang Min’s father nearly brought me to tears too.

Tanya: I don’t know it was really emotional for me, other than the situation with Chang Min’s father, but I am certainly happy that a lot of issues are starting to find their conclusions. As I said in my post: FINALLY!

Zombie: It’s nice to finally see where Dr. Gook is coming from. I had a feeling he’d have some tragic backstory when he was all chummy with the kid with the broken arm. You just knew it was going to be something like that but I had no idea he’d be so bitter about his past that he’d essentially drop all of his feelings for Jin Hee because of it. That seems a little bit extreme to me but I guess if he was really that traumatized, he could still be carrying around quite a grudge.

Tanya: Yes, there was a lot of much needed perspective into Dr. Gook this week. It kind of made his stances on a lot of things make sense… the anti-marriage, the reason why he’s so harsh on other, especially those who he sees himself in. It was nice.

Zombie: It was nice for us as the audience but not so nice for Jin Hee. I’m pretty sure she’s more than a little baffled by Dr. Gook’s coldness. Can’t say that I blame her. She’s baffled by a lot of things right now and for good reason!

Karen: I think Jin Hee should stay back and let the men sort out their issues naturally. I’m sure she will find out soon about the reason for Dr. Gook’s strange behavior. I see him letting go of her immediately, but I think he’ll come around and realize that this is not the way love works. Also, after Chang Min takes some time to reflect on himself, he’ll also come around to be a more mature person.

Zombie: So which of these men does Jin Hee choose? They both have issues, obviously, but which is the better fit? The one who broke her heart or the one who now makes it flutter? I know, I ask the really important questions, don’t I?

Karen: A hard question, honestly. I think Jin Hee can be happy with either man, but I would be  selfish to add my own opinion to say that as cute as Dr. Gook is, I am still on Chang Min’s side.

Tanya: You know, I actually started questioning whether or not Jin Hee and Chang Min will end up together again this week. This could be one of those dramas that totally goes against the cliche and doesn’t have them together in the end. I think the case of Jin Hee and Dr. Gook still has some merit, but there are just too many flaws there, in my opinion.

Zombie: I was beginning to wonder that too but then Chang Min’s dad had to go and almost die and now I’m pretty sure it’s going to be that horribly sad event that brings them both together. Remember, we did say, at the beginning of this drama, that we were hoping Chang Min’s dad would show up and reunite the two. Well, here he is, showing up in a way none of us expected or hoped for, but bringing the two together, nonetheless. I think this is just about the worst way to bring Jin Hee and Chang Min together but if it works… *sobs*

Karen: I’m dying for the next episode! I can’t imagine Chang Min’s father dying. Unlike the other time when Chang Min’s mother was in critical condition, Chang Min is not having a mental breakdown while diagnosing the problem. I hope Chang Min, along with Jin Hee, is able to save his father.

Zombie: The previews for next week make it look like he’s going to be around for a little while longer at least. I’m really hoping Chang Min and Jin Hee can save him before it’s too late. I really like Chang Min’s dad and I don’t want to see him go. He needs to stick around and talk/smack some sense into his family! They’re all a whole lot of crazy at times and he seems to be the only one with any real sense. Though I have to admit, Chang Min is getting a lot better as time goes on. I just hope he snaps out of this kicked puppy phase he’s going through. We all know he’s struggling right now but does he really have to walk around like Mopey McMoperson all the time? He’s killing me with his patheticness!

Karen: But, I think it’s very effective! I believe Jin Hee and I are feeling really bad for him when we see him like this. Even Jin Hee calmed down and was able to speak to Chang Min in a mature way afterwards.

Tanya: I can only have so much sympathy for people who put themselves into situations willingly. I feel for Chang Min when it comes to his father’s illness and when his mom was hospitalized, but I really have nothing when it comes to his feelings for Jin Hee and jealous streak towards Dr. Gook. Maybe I’m heartless? I actually was a little angry with Dr. Gook after the face-off with Chang Min at the restaurant. Yes, you’re his superior at work, but that doesn’t give you the right to lecture on personal matters… especially when you don’t know the whole story.

Zombie: I was more disappointed in Chang Min at that moment. I was in the middle of full-on fangirl squeals when he barged in and ruined the whole thing. I couldn’t help it! Dr. Gook was being so ridiculously adorable at that particular moment and then it was all ruined and everything just went down-hill from there. At the moment, I’m not feeling all that friendly toward Chang Min or Dr. Gook. One is being too huffy and the other too mopey… Get it together men! I’ve got to cheer for one of you!

Karen: I think they have their flaws to keep the story interesting. Honestly, in real life, men are also a pain. Sooner or later, their flaws show through and suddenly they are not so alluring anymore! Then again, I see they both have their shining moments in their pursuit of Jin Hee.

Tanya: TRUTH. Yeah, that’s all I’ve got on that one. So… what do we think about the reaction to Jin Hee’s confession about being divorced, then the subsequent discovery that she is divorced from Chang Min?

Zombie: I think everyone took the news rather well, actually. Yes, they were all shocked at first but that initial “wow” wore off quicker than I’d anticipated and things seem to be back to normal already. Well, they would be if those stinking Moms would stay away from the hospital. Wowzers! Talk about a crazy cat fight! I’d expect as much from Chang Min’s mom but from Jin Hee’s as well? I was a little surprised by that!

Karen: Woah, there is no stopping that fight. I knew this would happen eventually, but I think the entire fight was hilarious because I was watching baby Gook watch the fight and that kept me smiling the whole time. The fight went overboard when Chang Min’s mother was ready to get physical. Did they know where they were? They were in the hospital of all places.

Tanya: That whole sequence is ridiculous. It should have happened long ago. They’re adults, use your manner and your words. Also, you upset the baby. Honestly.

Zombie: Poor Baby Gook! Having to watch his Grandmother go all crazy in the hospital. It was obviously upsetting for him because he started bawling in the middle of it. You tell them Baby Gook! Grown-ups aren’t supposed to act like children!

Karen: Grown-ups need to set a good example! By the way, that reminds me of Han Ah Reum this week. She is getting more and more mature. I don’t know if I should forgive her for dumping Im Young Kyu or not, though she seemed to have redeemed herself naturally.

Zombie: I was really hoping to hate to until the end but she had to go and be all nice and caring towards Young Kyu this week and now I just can’t! She’s turned out to be a fairly decent person really and I almost wouldn’t mind seeing things work out between her and Young Kyu in the end. Almost.

Tanya: She has a strange dynamic about her that leaves me unsure. I’m not entirely sure where the relationship between her and Young Kyu is going to go either. I have a feeling it’ll be nowhere, but that doesn’t mean they won’t end up being really great friends and I’m almost okay with that. Maybe she leads him to the girl that will make him truly happy!

Zombie: I’m still cheering for him and the happy nurse.

Karen: I think Young Kyu’s fate with nurse Son Ye Seul is over (not that it ever started). They have virtually no scenes together to my dismay.

Tanya: Any other major points this week? Dr. Shim is forever wise. I love the way her character just rolls with whatever is thrown at her.

Karen: Dr. Shim is my hero and aspiration. I want to be as cool as she is when it comes to relationships and work.

Zombie: As cool as she is, I don’t think she’s got it all figured out just yet. It seems to me she’s still pining away for Dr. Gook, she’s just decided not to wear her heart on her sleeve. She may appear cool but I have a feeling she’s pretty distraught by Dr. Gook’s interest in Jin Hee. This is where her whole “love from afar” advice doesn’t seem very sound to me. If you love someone from too “afar” they’re not going to know you love them at all.

Karen: She’d scare off Dr. Gook if she revealed her feelings now. I think her daughter is the only obstacle in her way. She would have easily rekindled her relationship with Dr. Gook way before Dr. Gook realized he was interested in Jin Hee. That’s how cool Dr. Shim would be.

Zombie: Yes, now is too late for Dr. Shim to be admitting anything to Dr. Gook, though you’d think he’d be able to pick up on some of her hints. I mean it’s not like she’s been completely inconspicuous with her feelings. She may have demonstrated them in a very low-key way but she has demonstrated them. I think Dr. Gook has just chosen to ignore them because he already feels guilty enough when it comes to Dr. Shim. I mean he did break her heart once before, I don’t think he wants to do it again. Well, not intentionally anyway. I’m pretty sure his obvious feelings for Jin Hee aren’t sitting too well with Dr. Shim at the moment.

Tanya: She really doesn’t seem like an overly jealous person to me… but maybe she just plays it like she’s too cool for school.

Zombie: If only the Moms would learn a lesson or two from her! I’m still shaking my head about that one!

Karen: I guess I have to also congratulate intern Lee Young Ae for becoming a mom too even though she’s a bit confused right now. It looks like we have a lot to look forward to in Emergency Couple as we wind down to the final weeks.

Tanya: Yes! The pregnancy… she’ll be okay though. Maybe not what she wanted but she seems like someone who fully embraces challenges.

Karen: I’m sure Dr. Gook will be after her if Young Ae mistreats her future child!

Zombie: Yes he will. He’s got some pretty strong feelings about parenting so I have no doubt he’ll make sure Young Ae takes care of herself now. Now if only he could take care of himself and get his feelings for Jin Hee straightened out… Maybe next week… Maybe next week…

HALLYU ZOMBIE DRAMA REVIEW: Emergency Couple Episodes 14-15 (2/4)

I'm back with part two of Emergency Couple where our main characters jump to all sorts of conclusions this week. I still think Emergency Couple is an engaging drama even if it is medically boring. Every character seems to have a deeper side to them that is worth discussing.

From our previous posts and drama episodes, I knew that Dr. Gook Chun Soo (Lee Pil Mo) had marriage inhibitions, but this week, he reveals a deeper reason for that, which is the fact that he grew up alone without parents. Even though love rival, Oh Chang Min (Choi Jin Hyuk), has a variety of family issues, at least he had a family. By not having a family, Dr. Gook had to bear the pain alone, which is unfortunate. When Dr. Gook realized that Oh Jin Hee (Song Ji Hyo) is a divorcee, their relationship beyond work is pretty much over as Dr. Gook cannot accept a person who divorced in what he thinks is in haste only to ruin the lives of a person's children. Of course, Dr. Shim Ji Hye (Choi Yeo Jin) is an exception because Dr. Gook felt that he forced her towards that path, and technically, Dr. Shim never married the father of her child.

At some point, Dr. Gook will need to take Dr. Shim's advice of locating and meeting his parents for closure because Dr. Gook will otherwise be stuck in limbo, unable to move on. Anyway, love is not something that can be turned off like a light bulb. Dr. Gook will soon realize that he cannot just stop loving Oh Jin Hee at will. Hiding his days away as a resident chief doctor isn't going to solve anything. Now, I know why he frequents the bar so much.

Chang Min seems to have made a grave mistake this week too when he followed Dr. Gook and Jin Hee after work only to harass Dr. Gook in public about dating Jin Hee. Jin Hee never said she was willing to start over with Chang Min, yet Chang Min let his anger and tunnel vision get the best of him, believing that Jin Hee was still his woman just because he once again, realized his own feelings for her. Luckily, Chang Min understood his mistakes and is willing to back off to give Jin Hee the space that she deserves. Chang Min is such an explosive character.

I was surprised at the two karaoke songs Chang Min sang: remakes of "Should I Say My Love To Her Again" originally by Kim Dong Ryul and "Scent of a Flower" originally sung by Lim Jeong Hee.

On the other hand, after Oh Jin Hee came to the conclusion that she cannot restart a relationship with Chang Min because she can't handle it and their families wouldn't be able to handle it, Jin Hee had no problem pretending to be in a relationship with Chang Min in front of the pastor who married them. How come she changes her stance so easily? Furthermore, what is the big deal about telling the pastor the truth?

The mother fight scene was epic. I enjoyed baby Gook's reactions to the fight scene as well. How could baby Gook act so well, looking at whoever is talking and crying on cue? Anyway, it's sad that the fight scene had to be done in such a public place, especially at the work place, embarrassing Jin Hee and Chang Min while dropping a gossip bomb on everyone else.

When Chang Min's father collapsed, I thought it was over for him and I was close to tears. I'm still holding on to hope that Chang Min's father will live. Next episode, please!

As for poor intern, Im Young Kyu (Yoon Jong Hoon), any doctor can make a mistake, but Young Kyu took his experience too much to heart and is having a mental breakdown. Although Young Kyu prescribed the wrong medicine, he is not completely at fault. The patient should know what kind of medication he is on at the time.

Furthermore, there are always warning labels on every drug (at least in the U.S.) that states that a patient should not try to take more than the prescribed dosage at any given time even when a dose is missed.

Lastly, I must talk about Han Ah Reum (Clara) and her growing maturity. She is one character that plays with my emotions. Do I hate her or do I not hate her? After her brutal dumping of Young Kyu, I have turned my back on her, but lately, she has been regaining my favor. Han Ah Reum knows that she does not have Chang Min's heart and she doesn't want to have a relationship with him without it. As the prime mister's daughter, Ah Reum could have been one of those typical rich girls who flaunt their money and power, yet Ah Reum remains mature and respectful towards her parents. Perhaps, Ah Reum can mature into an awesome, cool person like Dr. Shim one day.

HALLYU ZOMBIE DRAMA REVIEW: Emergency Couple Episodes 14-15 (1/4)

While there was some annoyance and some feels, I think the only thing I can really say about this week's episodes is "FINALLY!" I am so excited so many things happened and they can all be summed up with that one exclamation, so let's jump to it!

HALLYU ZOMBIE DRAMA REVIEW: Emergency Couple Episodes 12-13 (4/4)

This week Zombie Mamma and I talk about the excruciating romance that happened between Dr. Gook and Chang Min. Tanya has been zombified this week from hanging out with Zombie Mamma and Boyfriend, so she will take this week off to recover.

Zombie: Oh my word! The feels this week nearly killed me with an overwhelming abundance of feels! My poor heart could barely handle all of the flutters!

Karen: And all that advice! It’s enough to fill my head with so many thoughts about relationships!

Zombie: Dr. Shim is a very insightful person. She has a well-balanced perspective on life but she’s, surprisingly, not the only one. When Kim Kwang Soo started giving Jin Hee all of his advice on marriage, I was completely blown away. I had no idea he had so much depth to him! I’m really starting to like him!

Karen: I was wondering where Kwang Soo got all of his wisdom from since I have never seen him fight with Jin Ae. Wisdom comes with experience.

Zombie: Maybe he’s just a deeper character than I first gave him credit for. I mean, initially, I thought he was such a flake but as this show is progressing, he’s continually surprising me with his genuine love for his family and the level head he’s got on his shoulders. I think Jin Ae really found a keeper! He seems to be the perfect balance for her.

Karen: There’s no doubt that Kwang Soo is a very responsible husband and father. Perhaps, Jin Ae is the more immature one as she is the one always looking for sneaky ways to get around the situation. She even approached an ex-brother-in-law to borrow money. I suppose she had to do what she had to do, but going to an ex-brother-in-law for money is super awkward.

Zombie: I think it might not have been the best decision Jin Ae ever made, going to Chang Min for money but given the relationship between them, I wasn’t really appalled by her actions. They seem to have such a good relationship… As if it was never damaged by Chang Min and Jin Hee’s divorce. I have a feeling they’ll always be good friends.

Karen: I would have loved to see what life was like before the divorce. At least Jin Ae respects Chang Min and doesn’t try to lie her way through a financial emergency. In turn, Chang Min also fesses up to taking Dr. Gook’s jacket and even admits that he is not as mature as Dr. Gook. I have to give Chang Min points for that as well.

Zombie: I know, it seems like Chang Min is really growing up a lot, all of a sudden. I think he’s taking his feelings for Jin Hee a lot more seriously than he did the first time around because he wants to make sure he does things right this time around. He knows that if he screws anything up this time, he has no hope of ever getting Jin Hee back. Honestly, I’m not really sure how’s he’s even going to manage winning Jin Hee back at this moment. I know he’s trying, desperately at times (how else do you explain that kiss???) but are his efforts really going to be enough? I’m not so sure. Especially when Dr. Gook goes all adorably mushy on Jin Hee. Ugh! That ride home in the rain… Omo! I nearly died from Dr. Gook’s shy semi-confession. The way he answered both of her questions… Ack! I can’t even… SO STINKING CUTE!!!

Karen: The way I see it, both men are coming on strong. I really like the fact that Dr. Gook has a chance to date Jin Hee, but I am also sad that all of Chang Min’s efforts seem wasted. Chang Min seems to have fallen into second-lead territory where usually the second-lead tries to rekindle a relationship with a main lead, but the main lead has already fallen in love with the other main lead. In the end, the second-lead man just has to bear it. I can’t even tell Chang Min to keep pursuing Jin Hee either because I feel like she needs her space at this moment and he might just annoy her too much.

Zombie: And this is exactly where I’m torn! I can’t decide if I want to cheer for Chang Min or Dr. Gook. They’ve both managed to produce an excessive number of heart-palpitations on my end so I’m really dying. I usually cheer for the man who makes me swoon the most but in this case, there are two worthy (in their own way) candidates to win Jin Hee’s affections and I cannot, for the life of me, decide who would actually be better. They both have their good qualities but which one would be better for Jin Hee in the long-run? I honestly have no idea!

Karen: Eventually, one man has to bow out and I believe that man is going to be Chang Min. I predict that Chang Min will have to let go of his Jin Hee dreams because his family is about to be shaken up by the news of his father’s illness. Chang Min will have to concentrate more on how to save his family soon rather than saving his love life.

Zombie: I honestly don’t know how to feel about that. I want to cheer for Chang Min but at the same time, you’re totally right. There are a lot of things Chang Min is going to have to deal with in the very near future and I can see this going one of two ways… 1. Chang Min’s family trials are going to drive a wedge between him and Jin Hee and they will part ways as friends or 2. Chang Min’s family trials are going to be the glue that sticks him and Jin Hee together for all of eternity. At this point, I’m not sure where this is headed but those are the two ways I see this going.

Karen: I think these scenarios all depend on Chang Min’s mother. Until she accepts the fact that she cannot control her son and that her son deserves to be happy, the entire family will be in shambles. In a way, she is a necessary person in keeping the family together. She has the ability to stop her divorce with Chang Min’s father and she has the ability to bless her son’s relationship with Jin Hee.

Zombie: Is it wrong to say I wish she were the one with the terminal health problem? It seems to me everyone’s life would a whole lot simpler with her out of the way.

Karen: Well, Sung Sook did almost die, but Jin Hee saved her. I hope to see a happy ending though. I’m not sure how that’s going to happen unless Jin Hee saved Oh Tae Suk and Chang Min’s life as well.

Zombie: That’s probably going to be the only way Chang Min’s mother will ever accept Jin Hee and even then… I’m not so sure… In that respect, Jin Hee would be much better off with Dr. Gook. Who needs that kind of crazy in their life?

Karen: Dr. Gook seems to have a boring and predictable life. Work. Drink. Sleep? If Jin Hee dated him, I wonder if she would die of boredom or will Dr. Gook change as a result of dating again? He didn’t seem to change much when he was dating Dr. Shim (even though Dr. Shim made him participate in side activities). Furthermore, Dr. Gook wouldn’t even take the plunge into marrying Dr. Shim. Will Dr. Gook eventually reach a dead end with Jin Hee as well?

Zombie: Again, this is why I’m torn. I can see things going well for Jin Hee if she chose Chang Min or Dr. Gook but at the same time, I could see them not working out, in the long-run, either. Both men have their good points and their not-so-good points which is why I’m having the hardest time trying to decide which one I’m going to cheer for the most. I can’t, for the life of me, figure out who would be the better fit for Jin Hee and it’s driving me absolutely crazy! On top of that, both men are making my heart flutter like a butterfly on speed which is making watching this drama an excruciatingly painful experience in some ways and completely delightful in others. I can’t decide if the overabundance of feels is a good thing or if eventually my poor heart is just going to explode…

Karen: More episodes will cure this feeling. I’m sure it will become clearer next week!

Zombie: I’m really hoping so… I’m not sure how much more of this exquisite torture I can take! It’s not every day you have a drama with two worthy men making your heart go pitter-patter. Usually one out-shines the other but not this time!

Karen: I know, though I have my pick! Usually, I fall for Dr. Gook every week, but Chang Min has got my heart this week. The drama has a completely different vibe from the beginning of the story. It’s all up to Jin Hee to decide which is the best path for her now.

So which way would you like to see this drama go? Which adorable gentleman, do you think, will ultimately win Jin Hee’s heart? We’d love to know what you think so be sure to leave us a comment below!
